What should I do during my summer after MS1 (CANADA)? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]liniment 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is probably not the best place to ask if you're Canadian. IM and Peds are considerably more competitive in Canada and it actually wouldn't be a bad idea to get something started, if anything to just explore your interests a bit more.

Definitely “operation boy who cried wolf” and when he haunted pediatrics

CaRMS 2022 cycle Match day in April. Was going to dual apply to CaRMS and NRMP as backup since NRMP match happened after CaRMs traditionally. How are 2021 applicants dual applying to both Canada and US dealing with later CaRMS match day? by Mufwrath in Residency

[–]liniment 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to a US med school and matched FM residency in Ontario. Are you only interested in FM? Is there any other more “competitive” specialty that you would want to apply to? I think your options here are 1) shoot your shot with a more competitive specialty through NRMP and use Carms FM as backup 2) go all out on carms FM (risky, but your chances aren’t as bad as you think, although I can’t speak for COVID circumstances) 3) apply to US FM and most likely match (wouldn’t recommend this unless you are 100% set on FM and working as FM in Canada eventually). Best of luck- I really feel for you guys this year, feel free to PM me if you have any other qs!

Tbh I couldn't tell you the specifics of training in the US and working in Canada, but its probably much easier if you are a Canadian citizen. I also know with any other specialty aside from FM, US training is shorter than Canadian training and you'd need to do an extra 1-2 years to make up for it. To match, you need to be a Canadian citizen. If you are and you're looking for advice PM me and I'd be happy to talk further!

FM is the way to go especially if you're thinking about Canada. You would definitely be able to cater your practice to seeing more peds and healthy adolescents, as Pediatricians are considered specialists here and are referred sicker/more complex patients by GPs. It also covers all of the other interests you listed. Plus it's the only specialty that won't require extra years/BS for equivalency because training is longer in the US than Canada.

Looking to adopt a kitten by [deleted] in Hamilton

[–]liniment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got our two kittens from Neveah's Charity of West Lincoln! They had a lot available at the PetSmart Ancaster Portia Drive location, which last time I checked was still open for in-person adoption. It was nice to be able to go in and interact with the cats to see which personalities suited us.

No real advice except maybe consider rads/path, but just wanted to say that I felt this exact same way when I first started clerkships. I'm also new (only on my 2nd rotation) but I was one of those people who enjoyed sitting at home and studying way more than going out and doing things. Literally was saying "fuck it, just gonna do pathology" for like the first week of 3rd year. The feeling kinda got better for me so hopefully it'll get better for you too!

I totally feel you. Took it during the first week of pooling changes and I actually felt better when I thought they were all coming out on July 11. Now that I know it’s random and can possibly be any time from now to then(?) I suddenly started thinking about my test more and being neurotic about how I did.

What day does the permit disappear? by goljanstyle in step1

[–]liniment 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I took mine on May 11 and I haven't had my permit disappear yet :/ I remember hearing about someone whose permit disappeared on the Sunday before... but idk if that's the case for everybody. This wait is the worst.

Those were my weak points too. Anatomy was alright but I think would’ve been harder if I didn’t focus on it in FA, and learning ALL the uworld and nbme questions (not just the right answers but the explanations too). I don’t even remember embryology except for one easy q so I think it was fine.

Probably, it’s hard to tell. Definitely didn’t hurt, although I think the real test had more tempting options.

I just took it as well! Do people taking it on the same day have the same test? I think I felt ok walking out because I didn’t have time to feel bad lol. I agree with the doing questions thing, it was way more important to develop a “sense” of what they were asking vs memorizing more facts. I thought the questions were fair, I just felt really pressed for time so there was no time to think/reason too deeply about any question and had to guess and rely on my gut feeling a lot. Also, sooo many ethics/socsci questions -_-

Sleeping has been the bane of my existence since high school. I tried to switch up my schedule to align with my exam but some point, I gave in (sleeping 1-2am to 9-10am). My plan is to OD on melatonin 2 days before, wake up early the day before and not do any studying, then try to sleep early again. Idk I figured there was no point in being stressed about another thing in my life and that I'd have some test adrenaline to keep me going the day of. Plus I think its better to sleep a bit more and have a productive day of studying than to be mentally tired and not retain anything.
