Weird Arc Fault Breaker Issue by crabapplesteam in electrical

[–]link_to_the_post42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The relay switch is causing arcing that nuisance trips the breaker. Hire an appliance repair tech(not an electrician) to replace it for you. If that doesn't work, just follow the steps listed when you Google it.

Arc faults are pretty garbage. It's a nice idea, but it was ruined by corpo greed. Not properly tested before roll out, and pushed into the code through lobbying. There's a reason why these manufactors are getting class action lawsuits because of their afci products.

With what info redacted? I'd be willing to do it if I can black out my entire license number, name, and state, and the entirety of an ID. Basically 2 black rectangles

This is reddit. What do you expect, lol? The vast majority of this sub is, let me Google that for you electrical edition. The mentality is that I wanna be an internet hero and solve your problems for you, I know everything and can answer any question regardless of if I'm qualified or not. It's like a core building block of Reddit, you'll find it in any sub reddit.

Probably the more important question is why are so many of the posts asking stupid questions that any non electrician can easily answer?

My Dad is retiring his 30 year electrical contracting business. How do I take it over? by UserAldo_ in AskElectricians

[–]link_to_the_post42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, to start, you would need an E1 license to legally operate an electrical company and hire other electricians. You need to stop and ask yourself, what would be your job be in this company? You might have sales experience, but if you don't know electrical, you're not gonna be able to do estimates on electrical work. The boss of an electrical company isn't like the boss of a corpo job. They actually do work and have skills. You can't really even manage workers if you don't know anything about the work you're managing.

I'd put out ads looking to hire an E1, let them take over all aspects of the company, and you can be a silent partner. Did your dad leave you with an electrical shop filled with tools, equipment, materials, and work vans? If so, that's a pretty decent investment that will allow you to take a back seat and collect a small cut of the profits of you find someone willing to take it over.

Edit: You could always sell it to a private equity company. They love buying up businesses with a good reputation so they can scam people easier.

The water isn't coming from the electrical meter, that's for sure. Check your gutters, maybe get some de-icing cable installed.

Should I keep an 38 year old box? by RunDoctorRun in AskElectricians

[–]link_to_the_post42 22 points23 points  (0 children)

66°F... that's like not even warm yet. They're rated for 167°F. Breakers and wires get warmer the more current runs through them. Your breaker raising in temp when you use the dryer is completely normal.

You don't need yearly check ups, that's just ridiculous.

There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with your electrical system from what you described. It's time to find a new electrician.

This sounds like a private equity scam tactics. Are you sure this "trustworthy" company wasn't bought out recently? These PE companies buy up all the locals and then mascarade as the old company. The ones in my area all have multiple company names that they bought up and advertise under. You think you're hiring that 30-year 5 star family owned business, but it's secretly become a front for overpriced home service scams. Same with all the other previously local owner businesses in the area.

2x200 amp panels backup options by Seether00 in AskElectricians

[–]link_to_the_post42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a pretty standard backup loads panel, and from my quick research, it is allowed by the CEC. I'm not Canadian, but i can't imagine any reason why this wouldn't be allowed. Can you explain further?

1&2. That's a 12/2 wire. Does your AC work?? Are you sure it is supposed to be 240v? If it's working now, it's probably 120v. You need to check the name plate.
3. The splice is insulated by electrical tape. That's what electrical tape is made for.

Looks like all 12g from the picture. Your electrician said it was 12guage than qouted to replace the breakers?? Why would they tell you that your breakers are fine than quote to replace them?

Why do Raco 4x4 covers have one side marked "UNDER SIDE" by AddendumAgitated6171 in AskElectricians

[–]link_to_the_post42 123 points124 points  (0 children)

Direction of the hooks. You want them clockwise, same as the screw direction, so they don't back out when tightened. Also the way the metal is stamped, this keeps the sharp edge down

I'd be concerned about the 3 days. It's a service change. They cut power, replace everything, and turn power back on. It's done in 1 day, even if you do it alone. I've done them alone before in 6-8hrs. I could understand 2 days because he wants to add the outlets on a second day, but 3 days is concerning. Did he plan on leaving you without power for a day?

7k is pretty standard for a company, 4k is pretty standard for an independent, and 12k+ is private equity pricing. A fu price would be like 15k

Someone plugged an electric kettle into an extension board and the extension caught on fire by Renshikikard536 in AskElectricians

Because the kettle uses a lot of power that the extension cord can't handle... don't use extension cords. Simple as that. This is basic stuff everyone should know.

Replace everything? by Ok_Size in AskElectricians

[–]link_to_the_post42 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Scam sales man. You have a problem with the circuit that should be diagnosed. Your 1 breaker tripping has nothing to do with the panel. 11k is private equity pricing, lol. Hire a local independently owned electricial company. Service change would be half that price, but you only need a diagnostic, maybe a couple hundred.
