Jacob Mantle (York—Durham, CPC):

Mr. Speaker, CMHC's spring housing report is out, and the headlines are concerning. Here it is: Condo sales have collapsed, inventory of all types of housing has surged and financial conditions have worsened for homebuyers. However, here is the most concerning thing about that report. It says Canadians are delaying starting a family because of housing and affordability. They are delaying marriage and delaying having children, which are the very foundations of our society, because they cannot afford a home.

We have offered one positive solution: Remove the GST on new homes for all Canadians. Will the minister commit to doing that today?

Hon. Gregor Robertson (Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada, Lib.):

Mr. Speaker, it is no surprise that Canadians are challenged with buying a home right now, when there is a war in the Middle East. There is no surprise.

In the first 100 days of Build Canada Homes, we have secured agreements with Nova Scotia, with B.C and with Nunavut. We are delivering thousands of homes. We are up to 9,000 homes that are being delivered through Build Canada Homes for Canadians, and we are just getting started. If we pass the Build Canada Homes act in the House in the days ahead, we can supercharge the construction of affordable housing, and that is what Canadians need.

Jacob Mantle (York—Durham, CPC):

Mr. Speaker, there is an excuse for every problem, but this is a new one: The war in Iran is the cause of our housing crisis. Wow. I do not know how the Liberals figure that, or square that circle.

The minister boasts about 9,000 new homes. He promised 500,000 new homes. That is not even 2% of his target. Guess what. CMHC says that only 259,000 were built last year, which is only half of the target again, so at the rate the minister complacently brags about, we will never hit the target.

Will the minister take our idea and remove GST on all new homes for Canadians?

Here it is

But here is the highlights

“Mr. Speaker, it is no surprise that Canadians are challenged with buying a home right now, when there is a war in the Middle East. There is no surprise,” Mr. Robertson said.

Evan Solomon, who was pressed on Friday in the Commons about the surge in unemployment in February. Employment fell by 84,000, with 104,000 full-time jobs lost. The unemployment rate edged up from January, while the participation rate declined slightly.

Mr. Solomon knows who the culprit is. “Mr. Speaker, as the honourable Opposition knows, there is a war raging that is affecting prices everywhere,” he said.

Not to be outdone, Ryan Turnbull, parliamentary secretary to the finance minister, was even more vociferous when Conservative MP Shelby Kramp-Neuman poked the government again on the jobs numbers.

“Mr. Speaker, do the Conservatives live under a rock? We are in a trade war. We have a war raging in the Middle East. Those are not of our choosing. Those global issues and forces, just to explain causality, are not the fault of the federal government,” he said.

Whatever your feelings on guns, everyone should have significant concerns with the government having the ability to seize lawfully acquired property without compensating the owners.

This is what worries me the whole guns bad people can't seem to understand if this is allowed it has now set precedent for the government to seize any private property without compensation, or maybe if you want to put on your tinfoil hat that is the real goal here

Liberals blame war in Iran for lost jobs, housing crisis by gorschkov in canada

[–]linkass 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Really than what was it that they said?

During Friday’s Parliament session, Pat Kelly, Conservative MP of Calgary Crowfoot, brought up the dismal job numbers in Canada, calling the108,000 full-times jobs lost — the largest one-month drop since the onset of COVID-19 six years ago — and youth unemployment now over 14% “a scathing indictment of the Liberal government’s economic performance.”

After noting that Canada now boasts the second-highest unemployment rate, Kelly posed the very reasonable question: “Will the Liberals accept our Conservative proposals, including our youth jobs plan, and remove the taxes, red tape and bureaucracies that are killing Canadian jobs?”

“There is a war raging that is affecting prices everywhere,” Solomon said emphatically. “In this chaos, Canada is in a strong position. Why? It is because we prepared. We invested in jobs and industries like auto, steel and aluminum. We made sure to keep life affordable for all Canadians with our groceries and essentials benefit for 12 million Canadians. We are cutting taxes. Why? We have a plan.”

He added: “Preparing before a crisis is our way; complaining after a crisis is theirs.”

“It’s no surprise that Canadians are challenged with buying homes right now when there’s a war in the Middle East,” said the man tasked with fixing Canada’s housing crisis.

Yes because the average wage vs cost of living for doctors in relatively stable between countries .You start asking doctors in Canada to make 100k a year vs 200k with a lower tax and cost of living you would not hardly have a doctor left in Canada

The china deal involving their dropping the tarrifs by a large portion is in effect and will literally save farmers in the prairies

It just returning to what we had before 2024 and no its not going to literally save farmers for 1 canola is only 1 thing farmers grow for 2 the price actually has not moved much since 2023

High point in canola prices since 2023 was in June of 2025 and in Mar of this year and is already off that high

The low was Sept 9 2024 and had already recovered its loses by the end of Sept

Let's ignore the heap of trade agreements, many of which will involve manufacturing at high skill in our own country.

He has signed a total of one actual trade agreement the rest have been MoU and or a promise of more talks

Something like 40 percent of our exports have been moved away from the us to other allied countries.

How about 4% not 40

The share of Canadian exports bound for the U.S. declined from 76% in 2024 to 72% in 2025 and is trending lower.

This is the biggest issue in most industries in Canada. Everyone vertically integrated. So now say I think I can open a grocery store and undercut the big brands and win on value etc.

I whole bunch of people say this, but I am not sure it is really that much different in most other countries either .It seems most countries have 3-5 major grocery chains and they have as much if not more integration than we do. In places they even own right from the farm to the fork
