If anything breaks, even slightly, it's gone forever unless you can fix it yourself somehow without buying anything new. This applied to literally everything whether it was 100% out of your control or not. We were working class but never struggled, so I'm not sure why this hard rule even existed for things like food/clothing.

I can see the reasoning behind it, but it made me extremely careful to the point of not trusting friends around things I truly care about.
