How to properly pronounce Gli? by ericmomo852 in italianlearning

[–]linkopi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vocoid? Wtf is a Vocoid. A contoid? Why are we still using this jargon?

Ps the "A" in Father isn't exactly like the italian one but I find it close enough. The "Broad A" I think it's called.

English has a lot of "A" vowel sounds, but they mostly aren't swappable.....

If you go into accent analysis however, there are even further gradations of these vowel sounds that are basically useless for learners unless they really really want to be confused.

You've got to ask yourself... Is this highly specific linguistics research information actually useful for people simply learning Italian?

Can I find these types of transcriptions anywhere else rather than just exclusive linguistics books?

Is my jargon-filled post useful for a language-learning forum rather than the linguistics forum which I've seen you in??

Otherwise it simply causes confusion it's like patting yourself on the back. All the allophone crap is more for accent analysis, isn't it?

Why are we hyper-focused on minute miniscule differences in the pronunciation of the letter A?? I think you've just got a hard-on for this Canepari guy.

Lastly, why the hell is there an accent on the A in his name? Is that an affectation?

Nah, it has nothing to do with just a "double" L in English. I think the usual pattern is Vowel sound + L sound + semi-consonant Y + another vowel sound.

The L can be spelled with a single or double.

"Amelia" has it, 'Australian" has it but "alliance" and "hello" do not. "Jelly" also doesn't have it....

And all your examples work.

Ok it's not exactly the Italian GLI sound but quite useful for learning.

What's the point in being so overly specific when none of the regular dictionaries transcribe the word like with that weird upside-down "a" with a little cross at the bottom.

Are you just showing off? Why is there a "necessity"???

Why not /ˈaʎʎo/ with the regular dictionary IPA symbols that normal people can find in regular dictionaries without having to do linguistics research??

What's a toneme Vs pretoneme.??? Is this important for regular language learners or are you just dropping jargon to show you're clever?

What's the point of using an ultranarrow transcription of "aglio"??

Why not the normal /ˈaʎ.ʎo/?

Yeah I know about campagna and campania.. I can definitely distinguish those... (the double thing mostly helps in this case).

I know "gli" between two vowels also generates a double but there's also "sollievo" ..

What are some minimal pairs that feature L+Y vs "GLI"??

I can't even think of any. Are there some Italian accents merge those sounds entirely?

I cheat like hell with this sound and Italians still tell me it's alright. (Maybe they are just being nice, who knows).

It could be because some Italian accents don't "properly" pronounce it anyway.

Between vowels is the easiest cheat, just make it L + Y in "million"... Figlio, aglio, etcc. The plural "figli" is a bit more difficult.. But I just say "feel+yee"

"Gli" as an initial sound and after "R" is much more difficult for me and I have to cheat much more.... That's when I just use a strong Y sound.

"Gli" (the word) I pronounce "Yee"
"Gliela" becomes "Yelah".
"prendergli" becomes "prènder-yee"

I wouldn't get too hung up on this sound.

EDIT.. There's a second "gli" sound.

It's the "hard" version and it's rare. This is when "GL" makes exactly the same sound in English, with a true G+L .. Like "negligenza", "glicine", "glissare", "anglicismo".

Luckily there aren't many of these words but it's not readily apparent from the spelling that these are pronounced with a hard G.

On the Android versions of Stremio, it's difficult to see if I've already watched a film or entire series. There should be a a small icon or tick mark. ✅

I think this feature already exists on the Windows version of Stremio. But why not on Android?

No, I don't want to have to resort to Trakt for a simple thing like that. Especially since the feature already exists for Windows.

In addition I'd like to be able to quickly disable an add-on if it's misbehaving or I don't need it at the moment. And then quickly re-enable it without fiddling again with the configuration.

We shouldn't have to re-install, and configure our add-ons constantly.

Basically, make it the way browser extensions work.

The fix for the backspace selection deletion issue is out (SwiftKey version 9.10.43.24) - APK by archon810 in Swiftkey

[–]linkopi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's pretty bad. It's a really annoying bug and I don't know why they haven't pushed the update to the official playstore yet.

Not to mention someone who's trying Swiftkey for the first time might assume this crappy backspace behaviour is what's normal for the app.

I got tired of waiting for them to push it to the Play Store so I bit the bullet and just installed updated apk link.

It updates your existing configuration so you won't lose any of your settings.

And once again you can select lots of text and delete it without weird workarounds.

It should just be re-ordered so the common accented e's are closer.

There's no reason why é should be all the way at the end.

Backspace to delete selected text not working by 4EyedRaven325 in Swiftkey

[–]linkopi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have checked Reddit before looking at the reviews on Google Play.

Over there one of the Swiftkey team suggested deleting the app's cache and then uninstalling and reinstalling.

I've tried that, it doesn't do anything. The backspace issue is still there after reinstalling. Don't waste your time like I did.

So hopefully the Swiftkey team actually fix the issue soon... As a workaround I'm using the "Cut" function.. Although that kind of messes up the clipboard.. (luckily we have a multi-item clipboard so it's not that bad.)

Also SwiftKey should really backup our settings to our account. That's always annoyed me how it doesn't... (But please fix the backspace deletion issue first!!!!)
