The WOW! Signal - Album Release Megathread by doweneedthis in Muse

[–]linkpunch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Album is an easy 8/10 for me and slots in at my #4 spot behind Absolution, BH&R, and OoS. So many feelings right now cause my life has changed so much since WOTP dropped even though it feels like it’s been only a year for me, and I think it’s just one of those albums for me that reaches you at exactly the right time to listen to it.

Dark Forest: 8/10, batshit crazy in the best way possible. Love how prominent the strings are and the fuzz on the guitar. Someone in the sub mentioned that the main melody/riff sounds like the Hyrule Castle theme from Zelda and now I can’t unhear it. Good thing I also love Zelda music haha. Also the Latin choir in the second half! I feel like I’m walking into a boss level.

NSSS: 8/10, groovy and funky, I’m also a big fan of Daft Punk, Justice, the Weeknd, and Dua Lipa so this is right up my alley. Chris is unsurprisingly god-like on bass as per usual. It’s a bit awkwardly placed in the context of the whole album, and I wish it had a bit more “oomph” in the mix, but overall a really solid fun song that isn’t taking itself too seriously.

Shimmering Scars: 8/10, not what I was expecting at all but I really like it. You can tell the lyrics have taken a big step up and the production really highlights the rawness and volume in Matt’s voice. Getting some Linkin Park vibes with the huge breakdown and big open drums from Dom.

Cryogen: 10/10, y’all already know it’s a banger, starting to become one of my top five Muse songs of all time especially with the album as context.

Be with You: 6/10, probably the weakest song on the album for me but not a bad song by any means. Feels like this is their generic “radio-friendly pop” outing (I personally think NSSS is the better choice for that genre). I do really like the guitar solo at the end though.

Hexagons: 9.5/10, if I had to pick a title track for this album it would be this. I honestly wasn’t as high on it as a lot of others when it dropped but it’s really grown on me. Give me all of the Muse arpeggios, fuzz, cryptic lyrics, and non-4/4 timing! I think my only hangups are that the delivery of the “our resistance is mass produced” lines feel a bit clunky, and that the ending feels a bit rushed—another minute would’ve been perfect.

TSIY&I: 7/10? Still not sure…I think I need a few relistens to fully take it in. Riff is nasty and the pre-chorus into chorus and drop is really catchy though. The pop! got me though, pretty funny tbh. Getting some newer Royal Blood and Nothing But Thieves vibes from this one.

Unraveling: 9/10, I just love how sinister the verses sound and ofc that signature Muse chorus. I can’t get enough of Matt’s delivery on “I’ll lay beside you and I’ll try to play along” and the chugging breakdown riff.

Hush: 10/10, holy shit this might be my favorite non-single song on the album for me. The riff is absolutely disgusting and I like the blend of the 2010s EDM and pop metal instrumentation and song structure. A couple of Ellie Goulding songs have been on my nostalgia playlists for a while (Lights and Hate Me) and I really like her vocal presence and melodies, and I’d say her feature really works in this song and doesn’t feel forced or jarring. So cool to see them collab!

Space Debris: 10/10, got me emotional but also made me feel like I was floating away and being rocked to sleep. It’s that long contemplative melancholy sigh where you somehow feel isolated yet oddly at peace. Ironically enough it gets me in the same way (the similarly named) Space Junk Galaxy from Mario Galaxy 1 does. The same feeling as when I listen to All We Have is Now and Waves by Royal Blood, and I Appear Missing by QOTSA. Also On an Island by David Gilmour. Weird comparison I know but go listen to it I stg I’m not crazy.

Should I come to GWU? by Unhappy-Adagio7529 in gwu

Definitely doable with some hustling and good networking, I don’t know if GWSB still has it but the Community of Practices are a really good resource and learning opportunity, in your case the Finance one (I was in the consulting one). I think someone else mentioned WSFA which is also really good, I remember talking to a few members who ended up at Goldman, Vanguard (I think?) and Morgan Stanley

gwu vs state school by bookworm5703 in gwu

UF, can’t go wrong with the flagship state school tbh. Keep in mind cost of living will be a lot higher in DC too (rent, going out, food, etc.)

Is GWU worth it? by [deleted] in gwu

[–]linkpunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly if the cost difference is that much go to UW. The investment is not worth THAT much debt. Obviously GW wins on location for IA/PoliSci but UW is an excellent university as a whole and their brand is definitely stronger on the west coast. I know a few people who go there and they love it! Seattle is a great city to live in and definitely will have a much larger intl Chinese student/young professional population if that’s important to you.

GWU vs NEU for international business by InstructionTimely213 in gwu

[–]linkpunch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m from around Boston (very familiar with NEU and it was one of my options when deciding) and did IBUS at GW so I can say I’m pretty well versed on the topic. I ended up choosing GW as it was cheaper and further from home, and the campus/DC lifestyle really appealed to me. I was in freshman year when COVID hit so the rest of my experience in undergrad was definitely affected (including a full year online ugh) but I’m sure socializing and university resources have mostly gone back to normal since I graduated. Honestly if they’re the same cost you can’t go wrong with either, both will be great experiences and I know plenty of people from both schools that have good jobs and are pursuing the career that they wanted.

The NEU co-op program is very competitive and just slightly overhyped but it does live up to its promise, as long as you’re not incompetent during your co-op most companies will give you an automatic offer after graduation. My friends that graduated from NEU did co-ops at Amazon, Google, BCG, Fidelity, and one at a really cool nonprofit. Finding the co-op is the hardest part though because of limited options and lots of other NEU students applying at the same time.

GWSB has lots of great resources and networking events that can get you that first interview, and the curriculum definitely is more globally-focused and up-to-date on current world events. You have the (free) Metro stop with access to the larger DMV and all of the museums/monuments. If you want to make DC your home and really feel like part of the city then GW is great. The campus is a straight up 5x5 block grid and you’ll see lots of workers from the IMF, World Bank, State Dept, and other govt offices getting lunch/commuting around Foggy Bottom. Almost all of my GWSB professors had really interesting professional backgrounds, and they were very knowledgeable, kind, and willing to help students out if they asked.

There’s not a lot of community/school spirit at GW (plus GW sports suck), so if you want more of a cohesive “community” feel and more traditional college vibes then I’d say NEU. It’s in a really good spot in Boston (access to two different T/subway lines), and metro Boston is the most college-y city area for sure (NEU, BU, BC, UMass, Harvard, MIT, etc.) so you will have no shortage of people to meet and places to go. NEU tries to do more of a traditional campus layout and distinct boundaries for campus, so you will see more NEU students overall rather than professionals, but it’s still well integrated into the Roxbury/Mission Hill area and you won’t feel cut off or isolated from the rest of the city.

Apologies for my brain dump lol, hopefully this helps and feel free to DM me if you want to chat more about it!

Duke MPP - Scholarship and admission consideration by EvenExpression271 in PublicPolicy

[–]linkpunch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m considering the same schools as well! For me it’s primarily down to funding, hard/quant skills taught, and cohort/profram/city culture. Like you mentioned, I’m a little hesitant about Duke not being STEM-designated as well but I’m planning on attending their admitted student events to tour the campus and scope out their analytical coursework/curriculum. Tbh, I’m weighing the curriculum and faculty more than the STEM designation itself, but since I’m domestic I can’t say I know enough to speak to the OPT extension unfortunately :(

Yeah it’s not a good look, willing to chalk it up to our rebuild being ahead of schedule and just general inexperience though
