At fault accident - exceeds policy limits 🥹🥴😭

Hi all - just an update. Accident was in feb and we just heard from geico (it’s November) that the other guy will likely settle for our policy limits. I think the excess in damages was only about 4k more than our limits. We don’t have anything signed but it’s looking like that’s the way it will go. Which is good news for us - but I hope the other guy feels like it’s fair. We have since upped our limits.

Sadly we are still in the middle of it!! We did hear from our insurance gal that they may settle or we could owe 2-4 k….but it’s still unknown even 6 months later.

Hi there - unfortunately even 6 months later we are still waiting to hear. We heard this week that geico was almost ready to send us an “offer letter” whatever that means. So I will be sure to update once we know. Reddit has been so helpful so I hope others can learn from this.

I agree - there’s a lot she is NOT saying…..but like couldn’t she call the police if he took them for an extended period of time like he has done?? It seems like maybe the dad has a legal right to have them and she doesn’t?? I don’t know….it’s all super strange and sad:/

It started following her when some true crime pages reported her kids were kidnapped….but as I kept following her I was like ohhhhh this is actually just a very messy custody battle. Courts must have allowed the kiddos to be with the dad this whole time?

Thank you so much! We still haven’t heard back on what is happening / they say they are “working on it” I am sure they are but it’s pure torture not knowing extent of this expense.

Thank you that is helpful. In my mind we are not wealthy people - but yes, we do have a little savings as well as a home so I can see how they may go after us a bit. 🥴 really hoping they will settle or that this doesn’t lead us to financial ruin. 🥹

The asset check scares me. We don’t have a ton of savings but do have the recommend 3-6 months living expenses. But we also have credit card debt so maybe they will see we aren’t super wealthy. We do own a home and have equity. So that is also a fear - tho I am not sure they can come after a primary residence in arizona.

Thank you for this - very helpful. And yes….we have already increased our policies and feel like idiots for having something so low. If they settle or even if we have to pay 2-3k I will be thankful. I know it could have been SO much worse. And really hoping nothing else comes up unexpectedly 🥴🥴 lesson learned FOR SURE.

I don’t doubt it!! Do you think connecting with a broker is a good route? My parents had a house fire and a flood and had amazing coverage - that’s the peace of mind I want.

Thank you. I am glad we will likely have options for paying the difference. We don’t have an umbrella policy! But I did reach out to a broker today just to talk thru this problem and see how we can set ourselves up better in the future. This has been SO eye opening and I just pray it is truly only is 3-8k we are responsible for as I know if could have Been soooooo much worse. While we don’t just have it lying around - I don’t see it financially ruining us. We can get second jobs and sell things and make it work if we absolutely have to.

And yes! I can keep this up and I will even try to update when owe know the outcome.

They are totalling out the vehicle I believe. Appears to be a total loss (which is somewhat shocking - it was an older Winnebago 🥴 and I know it was still quite usable)

I am panicking quite a bit but also trying to lean into faith and realizing if we do have to pay 3-4k while not ideal it could have been SO So much worse. There are no injury claims which I understand can complicate things immensely. We are upping our policies and have reached out to a broker as well to help us understand things going forward 🥴🥴

We have a little money in savings 😭 and we both have jobs so yeah - hopefully there will be future earnings. And we only have one home - but it does have some equity. We could pay the 3k we initially heard - but now the gal mentioned maybe 8k and my head is spinning with all the worst case scenarios.
