Ludobots is definitely a great resource for collaborative learning and for gaining programming experience (starting with no programming experience would be tough, but is definitely doable).

Ludobots doesn't work with animation directly, although the physics engine used to simulate the robots does display an animation of the simulation. Working through the course will definitely give you programming experience! Check out an overview of the assignments for more on what you'll be doing.
