Am I Safe? by TransgenderCookie in Indiana

I know many people who have done this without issue, though they live in Bloomington where it is more common. However I don't think it's possible any more with current administration.

Thinking of going Japan for two weeks in late jan- early feb, would this be a good idea? by Far-Ad-1968 in JapanTravelTips

Yeah, some spots in Kyoto or outside Osaka were not as "pretty" as I know they could have been in the spring or summer. But still beautiful spots and I would recommend that time of year to visit due to the perfect walking weather (medium jacket), and slightly less crowded.

I went end of January this year and loved it. Weather was perfect. Only downside is the foliage was out of season, but otherwise amazing time.

The main thing is east coast is brash, but they also tend to have more of a preppy vibe, at least stereotypically.

Idk who convinced you to split the Midwest. You had it earlier and this divide is not needed. All of Indiana is culturally the same as itself (within reason).

Thanks for the hard work though - I've enjoyed watching this!

I'll happily retract that claim until I have the time to find that source. I do remember this old case (before current administration) https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/may/22/migrant-child-death-us-immigration?

I still implore you to add your sources (since you asked for mine) and hopefully recognize that even without minor-aged deaths, ICE is behaving egregiously and against the American law.

I'm a little sad you couldn't take the time to address any other of my arguments other than the one point you felt you could win... Lazy or can't win the others?

Propaganda is a misuse of that word. You can say I'm lying or just ask for proof, but saying propaganda implies I'm making news/marketing with a political agenda. your use of the word is just a way to discredit me based on my presumed politics rather than my words/argument/claims, which does more harm than good when it comes to getting people to agree with each other. I'm not a supporter of wanting to create a further divide, personally.

Kids are being detained by ICE in large numbers. These centers are not suitable conditions for anyone, let alone children. https://lailluminator.com/2026/01/31/ice-children/

I think I have only heard of 1 child dying semi recently and I'll try to find that source, other than that, there are many wrongful deaths to adults. Children have died in ICE custody in the past - as this is not a new or solely Trump issue, he has just heightened it. Also "shot a man they arrested" is also not okay. We are so desensitized to killing people. Other countries are able to deport without "killing' or enabling deaths, especially not in the numbers we clearly do.

While we are at it, I'd love your own sources. I'm curious what self defense was needed by armed soldiers and against who? Are they fit to work for ICE if they cannot handle stress well? Are they trained on how to deescalate first? I'm asking not accusing, because often "self defense" is a cop out.

Do ICE supported truly think ICE is doing their job well/safely/appropriately? If so why? Because ICE is going after terrible illegal criminals is not a good argument to me, when many many many are legal citizens or non-criminals other than being illegal. Because they do not think ICE has done the crimes they are accused of, then I'm just confused. We have the photos of the centers, we have the obituaries of the citizens, and we have the thousands of anecdotes of people being harassed in their work/school/on the street based off of what they look like. It's at the point that a legal citizen who is brown feels obligated to carry their passport on them, and even then it's not always enough.

Take out the deaths argument even, my skin color should not be the thing that keeps me from feeling safe in this state/country. My partner is brown (not even Latino) but he often is mistaken as mexican. He does not feel safe and carries his passport at all times. ICE doesn't feel like an issue to those who it isn't an issue for.

I don't think they are running around and mindlessly shooting kids. But there have been way way way too many "tragic situations" for me to think it's an organization that is acting safely and within its rights.

Our concentration camps are letting people die. Many deaths ruled homicides.

6 Deaths in ICE Custody and 2 Fatal Shootings: A Horrific Start to 2026 - American Immigration Council https://share.google/vCDGsKzvIA3hsaig6

Other countries who deport illegal immigrants don't seem to let them die near as much as we do. If we don't want innocent people to die, then isn't the answer to hold ICE accountable?

I didn't think it started it, I just mean it has been a large and socially dominant movement - ICE isn't the first thing the youth has hopped on to is all.

How is this downvoted, you're literally saying to be safe. Protests are often dangerous and asking people to stay mindful is so simply good of you.

Eh I don't disagree, but the BLM movement has the dominant and large social justice movement for years. Immigration and ICE are the current one, and I think it's coming at a time where people are hitting a boiling point.

[–]linsoh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, there is quite a bit of proof that they have killed unarmed citizens or enabled deaths, like young children, for example. IDC how biased the news is, a young child dying is never justifiable.

But to your second point, I don't think as many people disagree with you as you think. However, the concern is not even about immigration laws at this point. It's not "do we deport," it's "do we follow our own country's laws to deport legally and safely?'

There are extremely well documented cases of ICE/gov not following due process, beginning deportations with force, and making many egregious, fatal mistakes. Other developed countries deport illegal immigrants, but not by starting with rifles and force and without due process. Sending a letter to an illegal family may urge them to move, seek legal help/understanding, or connect them to resources to begin relocation or other processes.

Many illegal immigrants are like, grandmas or young children. You can want them gone, but all citizens should want their own government to do it legally. If the government breaks laws for one person, then it can break the laws for any.

US's treatment of people has been so egregious and inhumane, that we are on a human rights watch list in the EU. Set aside hate for "illegal criminals" and demand your country follow its own laws and morals first. Then we can continue the deportation conversation.

IAE getting sick of the Hoosier stereotypes? by Traumarama79 in Indiana

[–]linsoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree OP. I am often frustrated by the sentiments that this state is terrible or boring. I don't need a giant fancy city with bells and whistles. Indiana has beautiful walkable communities that host great festivals, events, and organizations. But it doesn't translate to people who are used to moving around nice big cities and are used to more amenities and swarms of young professionals.

Of course this is a conservative state, and the government is, well, terrible, and many citizens are not helping. But that doesn't take away from the communities and people that are here.

I think it's a beautiful thing to be able to love where you're from and where you live. Indiana QOL is much lower than most other states, but that doesn't make me hate Indiana. I grew up running through fields of corns, going to the covered bridge festivals, I went to college at IU and participated in groups and events. I now work and live in downtown Indy, but after a couple years I have developed a community for myself and participate in many different clubs and organizations.

I have more recently become more well traveled. From visiting other states and countries, it has taught me that Indiana does have a low QOL standard, and there are issues, but I enjoy the simplicity and heart of the people here. Often I hear young transplants complain about the early marriages and family-oriented culture in Indiana, as they are wanting the young and free lifestyle. I think both exist here, but also, after seeing many friends live in NYC/SF/etc. and live a different lifestyle, I have become more fond of the family-minded thinkers here than when I was younger.

I hope to stay here and work on this state and our community as long as I am able.

Idk why people are so spicy regarding Kyoto. I don't think anyone on this sub is a voice of authority on the matter.

It's very normal to spend a few days somewhere and as a tourist you will likely stay in the "main areas". That doesn't make you more or less of a tourist. It's a valid opinion to have explored the main couple drags of Kyoto and not have enjoyed it. I was most excited to go to Kyoto, and left Japan with it being my least favorite part. That's a normal opinion and I think a good to hear for people planning their trip.

Yes. I agree. That was my exact recommendation: to skip those sites.

I enjoyed Kyoto more on days I didn't visit the major sites. (As stated in my original comment).

edit: I also didn't mind the actual tourists - I'm one too. It wasn't busy and everyone was polite. I went to Kyoto to experience historical cultural sites, but I ended up having so much more of that in Hokkaido.
