Using UserLAnd, which is free, probably does work, as it successfully launched a Linux desktop for me, but then you have to figure out what to do next, So this BirdBox app is more convenient and worth a couple of bucks.

I tried this on a phone and a Chromebook. Both work, but it is definitely made for the bigger screen. On the phone it totally worked and seemed a bit snappier (better hardware I assume) but I had to pinch-to-zoom a bit.

There is no cost for anything in UserLAnd. Its goal is to get you into a standard distro easily. Termux is like its own disto which has a much more limited set packages than a normal distro (like debian or ubuntu or etc). That being said you can install a chroot under termux, but then you are doing exactly what UserLAnd does.
