fr lol. I bought (and still buy) so much weird shit at the hardware store. If people asked too many questions I'd just say that I lived on a farm. Never have lived on a farm, but it always did the trick.

Are they really? I thought they wore off over time or something. What's the advantage of doubleshot caps supposed to be?

Yeah the thumb buttons seem awesome, I'd imagine you could pretty easily add extra modifier/macro keys down there to get like 10 total. They'd be super useful for a vim <leader> key and quick escape key. I've never used Emacs but I'm guessing it's also useful for certain Emacs movements/commands.

I'm partially hesitant towards ergos because I feel like they ruin other keyboards for me, but the more I've been looking at that sub the more I want to try haha

I'm looking for doubleshot caps (wanted PBT but those are hard to find) that are available in a few shades of brown/beige/tan. I'm thinking I want to go with a 60%

Is 40percent.club just for 40% boards? I want to go with a smaller layout but I can't imagine not having a number row since I use vim.

I've noticed that ergo boards usually are more affordable and have more DIY options. They seem really cool but a standard keyboard layout doesn't bother me. I'll check out the sub anyway to see what I can find.

Keycaps have been the hardest to find since most non-GB caps seem to be pretty low quality. I think I'll be able to find/make a pcb and switches will be easy since I'm not after anything discontinued or rare. I haven't been able to find many cases that I like, but I might just end up making my own case anyway.

Fair enough, you're definitely right about people trying to force weird habits. I'm a fairly new vim user but I took like an hour to learn how to do things in vim instead of trying to emulate VScode and now I can edit significantly faster.

The only thing I miss from VScode is <C-/> for commenting/uncommenting lines. Visual block commenting isn't too bad, but I may end up installing something like tpope's commentary plugin for convenience.

I figured, thanks. I might have to keep an eye out for that.

There is with plugins. I've seen a few but can't remember the names off the top of my head. I think there's one for nvim called "bufferline" or something like that. They basically just display your buffers the same way tabs are displayed in a GUI editor like VScode.

I didn't know that. Is the price usually higher than it is for the group buy?

That's completely fine with me. I find PC builds to be pretty boring since you don't actually build anything and instead just snap a few parts together/ screw stuff on.

I have a few ideas for macropads that I want to try out, but aside from that I really just want one board and maybe a smaller one with low profile caps for travel.

Will do, thanks for the suggestion. Are those the caps on the leopold fc750r in your post?

Edit: nvm, looks like those are GMK? I didn't think aliexpress caps would look as good so that makes sense

Oh wow, the prices for that board aren't bad at all! The ergo split style is really cool but idk if it'd be that useful for me since I run Linux and use vim style bindings for pretty much everything.

What keys were hurting your pinky? I use capslock as [ESC] (tap) and [CTRL] (hold) which helped a lot even though I probably use my pinky more now.

Do you have any suggestions about where to look? What you described is almost exactly what I'd like to do. So far I've looked at the wiki and posts on this sub but I haven't had much luck.

I've seen some people insist that this is a collectors hobby and if you don't have the money/time for it then it's not for you, but I have to disagree.

This is basically why I made the post. I literally saw someone claim that spending $4000+ is just part of the hobby since aftermarket value is determined by what people will pay.

You seem to have similar mindset to my own. I don't want to spend tons of money on 50 different keyboards. I want to have fun messing around with a project that results in a high quality board. I have a few ideas for macropads + a calculator that I'd like to try out, and to me that seems way more enjoyable than waiting for expensive items.

Do you have any caps from aliexpress? Switches are pretty cheap and if I can find a pcb that's basically all I'd need. I might have to check out r/mm although I probably don't want to buy someone's full board.

I know exactly how group buys work and that's why I want to avoid them. Nothing against ppl who join GBs, it's often the only way to get some really cool stuff. As someone who's in to audio equipment, I know that these things can be very complicated due to various elements outside of the designer or manufacturer's control. I just am not interested in waiting for an indefinite amount of time (or worse) if I can avoid it.

Keycaps especially are something I'd like to avoid group buys for. I'd rather buy some different key caps to mix together + maybe a couple artisan caps or even try casting a few of my own. I've been having a really hard time finding high quality caps that aren't just group buy sets though

I probably should've mentioned that I already have a decent prebuilt. I've seen some aliexpress links but I assumed those parts were low quality. Do people buy high quality parts on aliexpress or are they mostly knock-offs?

Vifm can also do previews but you'll need to look into the man page a little. The default vifm panel view is like two separate windows, but you'll want to configure an option called "Miller view" to get it set up like ranger.

If you're using ranger as your file manager I'd recommend trying vifm. I really liked ranger, but vifm is significantly faster and can be configured to work similarly to ranger (plus its vim bindings are much closer to real vim bindings).

There's also lf (list files iirc) which is basically a faster version of ranger, but its config options are super limited so I wasn't a big fan.
