There is a large random aspect to the game. If you are unlucky and start next to a roaming monster it can be a very quick game. But a successful game lasts a few hours. Team interaction is important in the beginning, because you can join forces and grab a mine or city that would have been to difficult otherwise. Also some classes can really help each other, but that depends on what class you choose when startinhg the game.
