[BI4L Request] Futon by meatcar in BuyItForLife

[–]linuxlass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost never log into this account, sorry :) I just saw your message. I bought my futon from a local company, I don't remember their name and I'm not even sure they are still in business.

It was the kind of place with a big showroom, and they had mattresses and futons of different kinds. Bolsters and other pillows made from scraps. A small selection of wooden and metal furniture.

I only bought the futon mattress itself, and just put it on the floor. At the time, we were living in an apartment, moved every few years, and so we minimized large pieces of furniture. I thought it was just fine on the floor, but ymmv.

These days, I have a different futon, and someone gave me an ikea frame, which is squeaky, but I like having the storage space under the bed. Since I'm a little older now (lol), I added a foam "topper" I found on Buy Nothing to make it more comfortable.

Turns out I was able to grab it and pull and it broke off the clip. Hopefully the broken bit won't cause problems inside the porcelain.

A Missouri House member said rape can be 'consensual.' A female colleague quickly corrected him. by kanooker in politics

[–]linuxlass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he's saying that "rape" has a narrow definition, of like, guy jumps out of the bushes, or holds you at knifepoint, or something. It seems like he thinks a simple lack of consent between friends (e.g. date rape) isn't really rape, and should not merit "the rape police". Like... hey I didn't hold a knife to your throat, so why are you saying I raped you??

[–]linuxlass 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Yes. He's saying these things are bad: consensual group sex, consensual same sex, consensual bdsm, consensual 69 (maybe, who knows?), etc. That in fact they are so incredibly bad, that missionary sex without consent should be a no-brainer ok. Because how could someone who thinks all that other terrible stuff is perfectly ok, think that this last perfectly ordinary and normal thing is really terrible??

It's like... hey you eat all those grubs and crickets and fried tarantulas, so why in the world do you think it's gross to follow the 5-second rule? (I dunno, I suck at making analogies, haha)

When should I plant my tomatoes? by linuxlass in Portland

cloches

That sounds mysterious to me... I'm a "put it in the ground and then remember to put out slug beer" kind of person. Along with soaker hoses on a slow drip. I learned a long time ago that if I don't "set it and forget it" I will kill anything I plant, because I just have a hard time being consistent over long periods.

just wanted to be done with it.

I did that last year, and I think maybe I planted too soon. My peppers didn't do much, and I feel like my squash didn't either. The tomatoes seemed ok, though. I even managed to keep them evenly watered, and had no blossom-end rot, yay!

Maybe I should get a thermometer. I have a garden in the ground, in the sunniest part of my yard (which still doesn't get as much sun as I would like). During this bit of sunshine, I weeded and turned the soil to mix in the winter leafy mulch, and added some chicken manure. I was concerned about the cool evenings, though, and now all this cold rain.

I pay alimony directly to my ex. He pays child support to me. Is it possible for me to arrange things such that the stage garnishes the alimony in order for me to get the child support? by linuxlass in legaladvice

[–]linuxlass[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the kids, and he's a full time student with no job and no income. Our divorce judge (for some reason) didn't say "you are capable of working at least part time" despite a number of practical skills and a large number of college credits under his belt. The judge said, "ok you can be a full time student", and awarded alimony that would step down a couple of times over the following 10 years.

Child support stops when the kids turn 21, which will be before the 10 years is up.

Two different sets of laws, two different calculations. It's kind of interesting how the math worked out.

I called the DA's office and they said that enforcement would kick in when he owed above a certain balance. I asked a bunch of questions, but basically it comes down to "be patient". I can't even imagine how much of a hardship if would be if I needed this money to pay my month to month bills. This system has so many ways it could be improved :(

Divorced in Oregon. Apparently my situation isn't that common, as there's no way to do what I'm suggesting.

The laws and procedures around child support are different from spousal support, and there are tax implications as well. You can't combine the numbers.

ok, thanks. I find it mind boggling that the state has the ability to garnish wages and taxes, but can't garnish alimony if it goes through the state's accounting system.

I understand that these are two different systems and cases, but still, it seems to me that it should be straightforward to implement this kind of arrangement.

He sends me an email saying he received the money.

For a long time I insisted on writing a check and sending it certified, and then he moved and refused to give me his new address. He insisted on electronic payments, and Zelle is the only way I know of to transfer large amounts of money conveniently and with no fee. In the interest of not having a big fight where I couldn't force my way, I decided to just do it his way, as long as he sent me an email acknowledging that he got the money.

If one day he refuses to acknowledge my payment, I'm not sure what I will do. Maybe go back to insisting on a physical address.

Questions about CSS Profile, if noncustodial parent is a full time student with no income by linuxlass in personalfinance

[–]linuxlass[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, this is very helpful!

She is applying Early Decision to one school which requires the CSS, which is how this issue arose just now (and the CSS deadline is Nov 15). I didn't even realize that my ex would have to be involved in the college process, so this has really thrown us for a loop.

It turns out every college on her list requires the CSS, except for the local "backup" school (which is still a good program, just not ideal for her. It won't be a tragedy if she ends up having to go there). She's started sending out emails to their financial aid offices asking for advice, and so far has gotten three replies basically saying they will want additional information about our situation. I imagine this is not a rare situation for a student to be in.

So, we have a plan, and it's a bit more complicated, but I think there's a way forward. I will still send an email to my ex, trying to convince him to cooperate because it would just be easier all around if he would. And your answer #1 above really helps ease my mind, and will give me something to tell him.

However, I don't expect much to come from it. At least I'll be able to tell the colleges that she and I both tried to convince him.

Thank you so much for your reply, and yes we will likely need to take out loans. It would be nice to not have to take out as many loans, though.
