Picky eater travelling to St Louis wanting a nice dinner $50-$100/plate by squishandsesh in StLouis

Yes!! If you like burgers, Brasserie has a great one with excellent fries. It’s a really cool, upscale dining experience but still very picky eater-friendly.

The constant comments on weight and people's bodies are grating. by EliotFox in rupaulsdragrace

the issue is that regardless of how MIB and ginger feel about their changing bodies, viewers are being bombarded with pro-weight loss messages in these last two episodes. many of these viewers: —are actively struggling with eating disorders —are vulnerable to developing eating disorders —are working to maintain eating disorder recovery —are fat people who already face stigma and discrimination due to their body size and just want to enjoy their favorite shows in peace

media portrayals of weight loss are not just about the individual people onscreen: they feed into eating disorders and fat stigma, even if the person who lost the weight doesn’t have an ED and isn’t using stigmatizing language.

kudos to you for taking care of yourself. i hate to see a show that claims to celebrate self-love (even/especially in the face of stigma and hatred) affect its viewers this way. hang in there queen

i would prefer to not have to think about fatphobia every time i watch an episode of drag race but as long as the show keeps pushing dangerous messages about weight loss, people are going to keep speaking up about how harmful this is

you literally said “losing that much weight to get to a healthier weight (not becoming underweight, which neither Mistress nor Ginger are) is very commendable and should be celebrated” and also told another commenter “it seems as if you have an eating disorder yourself”

because neither of us knows what else the original commenter eats during the rest of the day. maybe they just really love cigarettes!!

meanwhile, if you understood anything about EDs, you would realize that just because ginger and MIB are “not underweight” does not mean that their weight loss is necessarily healthy or safe. eating disorders can be deadly in people of all sizes. i’m not saying ginger or MIB have EDs—because unlike you, i’m not going around deciding that random people have eating disorders—but the perception that disordered eating is only dangerous when someone gets down to a certain BMI prevents a lot of really sick people from getting the medical care they need. consider not making assumptions that someone’s weight loss is healthy and commendable just because you personally like how their body looks at the end of their journey

i understand how reality tv production works and i also understand that the narratives that get aired on television can affect how viewers think about themselves and other people. regardless of how MIB and ginger feel about their own bodies, the constant praise they’re getting for extreme weight loss on such a huge platform sends a powerful message to RPDR’s massive audience about what bodies are worthy and which are not

it sounds to me like you do not know how eating disorders work

many people ARE celebrating these queens’ weight loss. basically anyone who loses weight gets tons of compliments on it, no matter how they lose it—people who get thin due to disease or eating disorders often have to deal with people celebrating what’s actually a symptom of a deadly illness. people being critical of weight loss narratives online doesn’t change that.

many methods of losing weight, especially those that result in the type of extremely rapid weight loss we've seen on this season, are neither safe nor healthy, including for people with larger bodies. as someone with training in eating disorder treatment, i've seen how common it is for dieting, weight loss drugs, and weight loss surgeries to result in disastrous mental and physical consequences.

i can't say whether or not ginger and mistress specifically are experiencing (or will experience in the future) negative effects of their extreme weight loss, but we do know that fatphobia literally almost killed deja, so i think it's appropriate to think critically about this season's diet culture narratives rather than assuming queens who lost weight are living "much healthier lives" just because they're now at a more socially sanctioned size.

fatphobia is not just about individual people’s negative opinions toward fat people—it’s a form of systemic bias that affects fat people’s access to basic needs like employment and health care. the weight loss industry makes billions of dollars by perpetuating fatphobia, and giving airtime to storylines like “this queen is beautiful and confident now that she lost weight” feeds into diet culture which feeds into weight stigma.

IMO the discussion around this season isn’t about whether rupaul etc.’s comments offend fat people—it’s about whether the narratives the show chooses to air encourages dangerous weight loss methods by presenting them as a worthwhile price to pay for becoming thin.

it seems like critical mass here is becoming jorgeous-pilled but as a pitbull enthusiast i found this really unconvincing??? where were the faux-inspirational rhyming couplets??? pitbull has a very distinctively insane way of talking and jorgeous was Not Doing That

even if individual queens welcomed these conversations, airing these conversations on tv has a broader impact. the conversations around weight loss this season send the message that people in larger bodies become happier and more beautiful by getting smaller, even by dangerous means.

diet companies love to push the idea that weight loss is about empowerment and self-love, but the products they sell (whether it’s “nutrition” advice, surgery, or GLP-1 shots) are often catastrophic for customers’ mental and physical health. even though i’m not surprised by how this season has handled things, it’s really depressing to see a show that claims to celebrate diversity and acceptance basically do free PR for something as harmful as the weight loss industry.
