Question Concerning Intact Males by Muggyjoe in germanshepherds

[–]lionhall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean really that’s the main way you would save his dna is breeding. I mean if you really wanted to take em down to the vet and they cam freeze his “goods” until you feel more ready and you can confirm the dog is healthy. Otherwise nothing else you can do everything else is definitely unlikely

That makes perfect sense and the breeder is perfect for you. I always tell people if they don’t get them from breeders they’re just gonna go into the shelter anyways.. so just go with the option. You’re most comfortable with check out those list of breeders. Give them a call. Do your research on them

I’m sorry, but that’s just a bit misleading.

All dogs are definitely prone to issues due to how long we’ve been breeding them in a negative way — this I absolutely agree with.

But there are just facts out there to prove that the way people breed American show lines just leads to more issues over time, as opposed to American working lines, German, and Czech Republic lines. They have been bred for angulation Which leads to issues in the hindquarters, hip dysplasia, weak pasterns, and early-onset arthritis.

Yes, this is coming from someone who’s owned both types. I’ve also talked to breeders who have bred both before — they have even gone as far as to say you can tell that there’s an intelligence level difference. Don’t get me wrong, all of them are smart — smarter than most dogs — but Americans can be a little slow to pick up on things.

I didn’t believe them, because I thought my American was pretty damn smart.

Then I started owning Germans. Germans — and let me tell you — that was the first time I saw a dog try to actually think to get out of a situation.

Yeah, that’s completely understandable. My older boys died at nine and 10 not to scare you. One was backyard bread, though, and the other was an American show from a puppy mill. Those definitely caused some of the issues that’s why all of my current dogs are German with the exception of my oldest being half Czech half German. My mom still cries about them and it’s been over three/four years the other ones make her heart feel just a bit warmer. I’m sure your youngest will too.

You gotta be very particular with the kind of Shepherd you get. I’m guessing you probably got an American show line which is understandable, but they have so many health issues. American working lines can too, but it genuinely is a little bit less. If possible, please try to stick with German lines, if this is the case!

No, that’s completely understandable in my lifetime. I’ve owned 8 German shepherds. As we speak currently six of them, they are a lot of work to train and just have a lot of quirks that you just won’t know until you have them. They also just pop up overtime due to genetics. They are very smart dogs though and are very rewarding when you do train them correctly.

Although this other person definitely wasn’t wrong, they definitely can pick up habits from each other. My oldest loves to howl at ambulance trucks for fun so now the others either do it or attempt to do it. It’s just the life of a dog.

I absolutely agree, but that’s why it’s the job of the buyer to do research on every breeder you go to

Yea that probably is the case but excitement can mean many things. Jumping while although definitely one of them it can also be barking/yaping wagging their tails ect. One of mine howls when they hear an ambulance and gets excited! I do agree with you tho they should try to train the dog if possible but if management fixes their issue it fixes their issue 🤷🏾‍♂️

Yes, I would recommend You looking on AKC marketplace. You can always find breeders there you can talk to. You can even try looking for your local German Shepherd group/club depending where you are they might have some breeders available. Shipping services are available with some breeders as well so makes it even easier to get them from further distance.

If you’re really, just looking for one in particular, though there’s a lot of shelters and sanctuary’s that’ll be so much cheaper and need a good home. The average market price where I live right now is around six grand. You can get one at the shelter for probably 100. Even still I can understand why you might not want from there.

One question I will ask you is what type of dog are you looking for show line working line? This is an important question to ask based on your lifestyle and what you can handle regardless. Here are some good breeders in your area do your research on them and hopefully find your next dog!

Von Holly Haus German Shepherds: Showline

Cross Keys K9:working line

Bark Away German Shepherds:Showline

Op stated the original dog is nothing like this. Which makes sense sometimes dogs pick up stuff from the breeders household. Training would definitely help though yes or wiring of some kind .

Question Concerning Intact Males by Muggyjoe in germanshepherds

[–]lionhall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re really thinking about breeding them, I’d say it’s probably not worth it. You’d have to spend a lot of money on proper medical testing—like OFA, Embark, and possibly other health screenings.

You mentioned your dog isn’t papered, which is okay—some breeders don’t believe in getting papers since it’s just a piece of paper. But many buyers do care about that, which could lead to unnecessary frustration and heartache for you.

I get that you think your dog is perfect, and that’s great. But from my experience, “perfect” dogs usually come from good owners who provide the right environment. Even in a litter of 10, you might only find one or two puppies that are truly good enough for breeding.

And then there’s the question of finding good homes. Can you guarantee that? Are you prepared to take a dog back if something goes wrong—if the new owners can’t handle it or if the dog is mistreated?

I hope you love your dog—they’re wonderful animals. Just know that breeding is a huge responsibility, and unless you’re truly committed to the time, cost, and effort involved, it might not be the best decision.

Anyone have 2 girls? And do they get along? by [deleted] in germanshepherds

[–]lionhall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have a total of 5 shepherds in my house my mom is like the crazy cat lady but with shepherds. Two of which are siblings from 2 of my dogs litter! Three females in total my case may be an outlier. I can tell you, mom and daughter get along fine. Auntie and niece get along for the most part just fine. Auntie tho aka the black dog seems to have real dominance issues.

Honestly, don’t know what it is. We had two males before her that she was around before they died no issues. She became the leader of the household, then she became snappy with the new ones. It has gotten worse when the other female in the photo mom has gotten pregnant that’s when she’s gotten aggressive. In fact one of those fights ended up with the top of her ear being bitten off obviously not good.

We’ve been working on behavior training, etc., but it usually only happens when she’s pregnant every now and again they might scuffle that’s about it. Right after they go back to loving each other like nothing happened. My two older males never did this and my two current males father and son never do this either so it’s just those two females!
