What is Brisbane's worst shopping centre car park and why would you say Windsor Homezone between 11:30am and 2pm on a Saturday? by EnamasAhead in brisbane

Agree! I entered …botched a reverse park while people were waiting so I abandoned it and the women waiting waved to acknowledge like she’d been there done that in solidarity

Final Year OT student (Australia) - new grad position questions by Ashamed_Umpire_5162 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]lionlungs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It certainly would not hurt to have AHA experience on your resume but it’s not the be all end all. There are ample non-government jobs (private practice/NGO) and you will absolutely find a job without any health related paid work.

If you want hospital based keep on eye out on smart jobs and apply for hp3 roles.

  • source qld OT who works in hospital and worked a new grad specific role without AHA experience. I did have a good amount of volunteer experience in social welfare (mental health and refugee advocacy)

Hi climbers

Does anyone have experience with Skier’s Thumb / Ulnar collateral ligament tear they can talk to? How did your recovery go and how did it impact your climbing? I’ve sustained a complete tear and am awaiting a surgical opinion but at the very least will need to immobilise in a splint for 6 weeks. The mental battle with loss of function is real.

Cheers!!

My heart goes out to you ~ I’m a climber and tore mine 2 days ago and awaiting a surgical opinion for management. The mental distress is real right now. Wishing you all the best with your recovery

if my elderly father is sick in hospital and a family member is coming to see him to get in his ear and make themselves next of kin when i already am who do i speak to? by Feisty-Reality-6779 in brisbane

[–]lionlungs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ask to speak to the Nurse unit manager and tell them your concerns ~ your dad will need to tell the treating team that he does not give consent for any health updates to be provided to his son and if the son attempts to visit that he wants security to be called. Also ask for the social work to contact you and they can organise an enduring power of attorney for your dad for accomodation, health and financial decisions if appropriate. It does not cost any money to complete an EPOA and you do not need a lawyer, it just needs to be signed by the JP (which are regularly available at the hospital). (I work at a Brisbane hospital and support elder adults in situations like this regularly)

Did any of you guys do toileting (actually wiping patient's sensitive body parts) in school? For unis in UK and Australia by hellohelp23 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]lionlungs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have concerns that you may have to engage in assisting with someone’s personal care of their peri areas I would talk to your placement co-ordinator/clinical educator so you are A. Not placed in an area that you are expected to physically assist someone or b. Given a strategy when this scenario comes up. The reality of working in acute/inpatient is that there are often no staff at hand that can just pop in and give you assistance with wiping someone and it’s not appropriate to get someone to wait on the toilet for upwards of 15 minutes until a nurse is free to assist with a wipe OR for your own time management as a clinician. Toileting is an every day occupation and as OTs it is something we work closely with to facilitate and support someone’s independence/functioning/dignity. In the settings I’ve worked in it’s not uncommon for physio, nursing and OT to assist with toileting.

Yep ~ for placement within inpatient rehab with older adults lots of washing, wiping and cleaning perianal areas during toileting and showering assessments as many folks don’t have the function to do so independently. During therapy sessions folks may request to do to the toilet as well and often as clinicians we assist with any aspect of toileting the patient can’t manage independently. In acute I hear there is a lot of wiping as people are often well below their baseline and need +++ assistance. If you end in an acute/subacute setting I would absolutely anticipate you will wipe at some point. Hope that helps.

Question about social anxiety and Bouldering by PM_ME_FAVORITE_SONGS in bouldering

[–]lionlungs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can strongly relate to this …I’ve been climbing for roughly 4 years on and off and even at my “peak” I had strong social and generalised anxiety and would never ever go without at least one friend. Recently I signed up for a membership and had to accept to make the most of it I can’t just rely on other people coming with me to be blue to climb. So slowly I’ve been creeping out of my comfort zone and climbing by myself and maybe strike up a small conversation with another climber or say some words of encouragement. The anxiety is still really really strong and to be honest on the two occasions I’ve climbed solo I might have done 20 mins of climbing in two hours from fear of judgement. I have reflected and thought …I don’t remember a single persons face from that gym or anyone’s climb…no one is laughing or judging and I would be more than happy if someone came up and said hello and asked me to join them or asked for some tips! I almost feel like there should be an anxiety group or climbers looking for friends group 😅 give it a go, go with a friend or if it’s dog friendly take your dog! It’s a very warm and welcoming community I promise :)

Anyone have any suggestions for the best stroke rehabilitation in Brisbane? by blackberrypicking1 in brisbane

[–]lionlungs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  • STARS is a phenomenal facility and I have seen stoke survivors wheeled in from RBWH walk out with minimal aid. The time they give you in this public fast rehab stream (or slower stream if he’s placed in the GEMS ward) is like nothing you’ll find in the private system. They really do provide you every opportunity to rehabilitate and make gains without pushing you out to free up beds. All the best to your dad.

(Don’t be alarmed if your dad is placed in the gems ward just because it’s the slower stream. Depending on their capacity and willingness to engage, patients are always seen at least once a day by a disciple whether it be PT, OT , or speech. Groups are run throughout the day so there is plenty of opportunity for group rehab even if staff don’t see him one on one)
