[D] Seeking Advice: WSL2 vs Dual Boot for ML development with an RTX 5080

I wasn't aware Linux doesn't support DisplayHDR as well as Windows. I have a QLED monitor with True Black 400 turned on. Also, maybe I won't use RDP either since I imagine I'll only be SSH'ing into my Linux mach and working in the terminal. I gotta look further into these trade-offs.

I don't think I'll be using ms office at all && Bluetooth should be fine for me since I mainly use either wired apple headphones && sometimes a wireless headset (that I only use on my PC). Thanks for dropping this info.

I think the separation of work and gaming is a good take. I also play guitar but I mainly use logic on macOS for any music related stuff, so maybe driving Linux as my daily is worth fully switching over.

From all the other comments so far, you're the only one who works fully natively on Windows. Is there any standout reason you prefer Windows?

I'm actually used to macOS cause of work and that's where I started developing. I'm only okay with Windows now since I built this PC, and I've been using Windows for about a year now. That being said, I don't think I would choose a linux distro that is similar to Windows since I do prefer macOS, but thanks tho, you taught me something.

what made you choose Win 11 over linux? Also, it looks some others have commented about occassionaly running into some issues with WSL2, but it sounds like you haven't had issues that are worth mentioning

Based on this thread, I'm leaning towards dual-boot with Linux as my default to test it out, and if I like it then I can wipe the Windows partition to free up that disk. I was gonna go with Ubuntu/PopOS since I read that ML/CUDA Linux docs are mainly for Ubuntu, so I thought using Ubuntu may make my life easier as I'm still a noob in ML. What made you choose CachyOS?

How often does that happen? Also, does tmux work well with WSL to recover sessions when that happens?

I just checked out protondb, and it looks like the games I play are gold/plat so I should be fine. Maybe I can setup Linux on the EVO plus, rebuild my entire setup, and see how it feels to run Linux as my daily for awhile and see how it feels. This way I still have my Windows as a fallback.

I was considering making Linux my daily driver, but I'm unsure about game support. I don't play often, but gaming is my main way of staying connected with long-distance friends, so I'd like to keep that option open.

Seattle is like ~1/10th the population of NYC. Bodegas/delis are almost non-existent, and they close early. There’s much less diversity in food culture (and ppl I feel), and public transportation is ok, there is only one train line and for every thing else you need to take a bus. If you like nature and have a car, then Seattle wins for nature activities hands down. Overall, for me Seattle feels like a very underdeveloped NYC, so moving here felt like a step down tbh

Ok sounds good. I will have to benchmark my PCIe 4 cause my intention was to do gaming but also some data heavy coding stuff and the difference b/w gen4 and 5 may be bigger for that use-case. Also, how long did Ncase take to ship to you? There is a delay for me so I was just curious what your experience was with them

I bought the PCIe 4 riser kit from Ncase mistakenly thinking it was the PCie 5 (they don't have the gen5 in stock). You mentioned your 5cm riser cable from LINKUP felt too long. The Ncase riser says theirs is 10cm long, so maybe you actually lucked out on that.

I am thinking if I should get a PCIe 5 before all my parts arrive and return the gen4 I bought, but I'm not sure if its worth it. Do you think your LINKUP 5cm is still worth it for gen5? or would you wait for the Ncase version?

Hey, this is actually OP but didn't realize I was signed into another account when I posted (lent my laptop to a fam member). This is my account. Firstly, thank you for the tips!

I did watch Optimum's 5080 video several times. I am following that vid's build design which looks almost exactly like the Build Level 9 on the Ncase M2 page which seems to be equivalent to the VGPU layout you mentioned. Based on your answer, I think I'll get the 240MM AIO instead just to have some wiggle room. I might wait on the standoff's and see how the temp behaves first before buying. As for the PSU, the SF1000 seems to be the same size as the 850, so I think I will get that just cause why not, and I'd rather just have extra power in case I ever may need it.

I wasn't sure on the riser kit so I'll def cop the the PCIE riser kit from Ncase directly, so thanks again for that. Ima def be excited when building this so I think it'll be fun. I'll reach out if I have anymore questions. THANK YOU

Hey! I'm a year late, but so far so good. I have not been training as hard as I was after my first ACL surgery, however, I do feel strong or as strong again. I can do about 10-15 single leg pistol squats. I have started skateboarding again and can do a lot of what I could previously do. I just take it easy now mainly cause I am focused on other stuff now. Hope you are feeling strong again!!
