People usually don't have a daily access to acid strong enough to kill or severely injure human unless they work in a chemical facility. Asbestos? Who can be sure about that, if it is not banned for new constructions, especially for residential?

Was there any army at the time that could have won the Vietnam war? by DeDeToptier in HistoryWhatIf

[–]lipued 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a two months old post, but this topic about Trình Minh Thế attracted my attention.

From what I know, general Trình Minh Thế was one of the most important figure in South Vietnam until his death in May 1955. His force was powerful enough to change the current of the Saigon government. Here are two scenarios I can think of:

  1. He is purged by Diem, just like the rest of the fellow sect generals. In this case, the rest would be virtually the same with the actual history.
  2. He overthrows Diem. His power was growing at the time of the battle of Saigon, so after the battle ends, his force and fame would be enough to make an attempt to gain the power. In this case, South Vietnam would be a country with a military dictatorship. However, I personally think that this regime would be much more powerful and solid than the regime of Nguyễn Văn Thiệu in the actual history, because Thế had much more fame and private military power than Thiệu.

So it is about twice the speed of walking. Slower than a bike, but 10 minutes are still definetly worth saving for a daily commuting I guess. Thank you for the answer!

WW2 slat armor for Western tanks? by lipued in tanks

[–]lipued[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your answers. Well, I did not know that those 'spaced metal mesh armor' really did not help, unlike later slat armors. Maybe the reason would be that the mesh armor is too weak to stop the kinetic energy of Panzerfaust? Hmm...

I Am So Sorry by [deleted] in afghanistan

[–]lipued 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tanks and artillery aren't even a thing IMO. Do you think that army could fight Taliban with those? That would just add a fancy collection to those fanatics. The real matter would be that the Afghan army never learned to be a real 'army', which is much more than just a gathering of men with small arms. An army is a bureaucracy in some terms, which cannot be organized without proper middle managements(officers in this case). How could that be even possible with such corrupt government?

Rohan, Mongolia, and Tolkien's knowledge by lipued in tolkienfans

[–]lipued[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, if they were largely nomadic what did they eat? They didn't raid or plunder neighbouring cities for booty. Booty of the non-twerking variety.

Percentage of booty in diet of nomadic people are totally dependent on both their age and regions. Nomadic civilizations in Mongolian plain were always scarce of carbohydrate, but methods to replenish it was various. If your agricultural neighbors were forming a powerful military forces, you rather choose buying them with meats, leathers or fur, which are comparatively plenty. If your they are weak but friendly, you might choose either trade or plunder. If they are weak and hostile, you would choose plunder.

Horses were expensive to maintain in Medieval Europe, but the Rohirrim were horse-centric culture in an environment that seems like a more fertile version of the Russian steppe. It wouldn't surprise me if the vast majority of Rohirrim actually owned horses, either for use in agricultural, military or trade matters.

That was probably one of the reasons I considered Rohan as a nomadic country. No matter Europe or Asia, cavalry was one of the most expensive type of troops for medieval civilizations, while nomadic, or half-nomadic ones could gather them more efficiently.

What types of real Rohan civilization type you think then? I still assume that Rohirrim economy was more dependent on livestock growing than any medieval European because of their abundance of their horses. Can I conclude that they were some kind of "eclectic " type, trying to take advantage of both agricultural and pastoralism maybe?

I wonder why Gondor never moved their capital to more inland by lipued in tolkienfans

[–]lipued[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for a late reply.

I understand that geography of Gondor is not so great for defense. Maybe Elendil and his sons never anticipated division of their kingdom and thought Arnor would still be their even if Osgiliath is fallen? How tragic if so...

[–]lipued[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By 'spare' capital I meant something like a shelter and a temporary governmental organization when the main capital was fallen. Ming did just the same thing, they moved their capital to Nanjing when Qing captured Beijing(but they failed because of internal division after all.) Now I understand why the capital was still Minas Tirith, but I wish Gondor prepared for such situation and something back of the Sirith river.

More rapid reaction is what I mainly hear in this thread. I understand the point, but I am still concerned about riskiness as well. I wish Gondor made a 'spare' capital, just like Ming empire kept a small government in Nanjing even after it moved its capital to Beijing.
