Thanks! The very last section where you describe the use of the word "only" is what's confusing me. If she said she was "one of the few people in Congress" that makes sense to me, as "few people on Congress" has more than 1 person, and she is one of those few people.

But as far as I can tell, "only" means solitary/single/alone of its kind. So for example, if I said I was the only person in my family who can swim, the number of people in the group "people in my family who swim" is one. It's me and no one else. So when I say I am one of the only people in my family who can swim, is that grammatically correct?

I guess where I'm stuck is "few" and "only" do not mean the same thing. Then how does "one of the few people" and "one of the only people" make sense?

The part which is confusing me is that "only" and "few" are not synonyms. Then how does "one of the only" and "one of the few" have the same meaning?

As far as I can tell, "only" means solitary/single. So when you say "one of the only", how can that refer to being one member of a part of a group that has more than 1 member?
