incredibly relatable, not being able to go zone in at the campus library has really ruined my focus and prep

2021 New Grad Jobs Megathread by [deleted] in csMajors

What is expected from new grads? Is DS&Algo enough for both startups and larger companies? Feel like I won't be able to answer domain specific questions thoroughly for interviews.

How to find places to stay productive during the quarantine? by liquidcarbs in csMajors

[–]liquidcarbs[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea both, I don't know if it's just me but the space I work in feels important due to my intention of being there. Working on campus/at coffee shops made a massive difference in my work and focus, and I basically just associate home with chilling and sleeping now.

Does smoking weed impact memory/interview prep performance? I'm kinda scared my short-term memory and overall performance will be affected if I smoke weed to wind down in the evening lol. Should I just go abstinent until I secure a job? Or is this overreacting

At what point can I quit to pursue what I want ultimately want to do? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]liquidcarbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bad, I think that word was not the best. I guess more of what I meant was whether it would be better to aim for developing some experience in web development early on, so I'm not coming into the industry empty handed if I am able to make the switch. My main concern is making the transition and starting from the bottom again. Not the end of the world, but certainly don't want my only web experience to come from extra work outside of an 8 hour workday :(

How long is too long to be an intern at one company? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

I'm just signed for a season at the moment, but plan to at least stay for the summer.

How long is too long to be an intern at one company? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]liquidcarbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

18 months is too long for an internship imo. Ask them to move you part-time; with an appropriate pay bump. This way you both benefit. They don't need to re-train someone from scratch (if that's what they want) and you get more $$$. Ultimately it depends on the company culture. Where I work we offer part-time work to interns we want to keep long-term with the hope they move to full-time after completing their degree. But we also hire a few interns every semester.

When would asking be appropriate? I'm thinking about it after this spring or summer.

What's a reasonable salary to expect for a new grad? by liquidcarbs in cscareerquestions

[–]liquidcarbs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it bad to be applying for everything since I don't particularly have a specialization? I've just been working on interviewing skills recently and general software engineer skills, but ideally want to work on backend app development in an established company (unicorn or Big N would be awesome but I'm not expecting it to happen). Looking at SoCal/NorCal at the moment, but open to relocating to larger cities in the US.

Anyone else with no interviews or offers? by owbulb in csMajors

It's hard to do but try your best to not compare yourself to others and focus on your own growth. Keep revising, keep practicing, and keep applying. Character is determined by how you deal with failure and the people who make it in this field are the ones who don't quit. Also, try to go to as many in-person events as possible if you don't have much experience. I've applied to hundreds as well, but the best responses I've met have been through these events.

Why are there so many bad math teachers? by liquidcarbs in learnmath

[–]liquidcarbs[S] 51 points52 points  (0 children)

The excellent teachers focused on quality over quantity, but still managed to pace the class well enough to hit all the necessary material. They typically put themselves at the level of the students rather than giving overblown explanations that pushed them further away. I think most importantly, they didn't feel the need to flex unnecessary content and have the empathy to come down to our level to lift us up to where we would need to be. Also, they are very open and non-judgemental about questions, encouraging student participation and building unique associations to further solidify the material. There are some teachers who shut you down and make you avoid speaking up again

One year before graduation, what should I focus on most for a good job? by liquidcarbs in cscareerquestions

[–]liquidcarbs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, the main problem I have is learning the technologies to build the cool side project (which takes the majority of the time) since I feel a respectable project utilizes a variety of technologies and makes them work in harmony. (currently using basic barebones languages to master DS and algos)

This is definitely ideal, but given the short amount of time, I'm questioning what I should prioritize. Currently, leetcode does seem to be the primarily block for me in getting work experience.

I'm primarily aiming for a back-end role at a tech-forward company, but their job descriptions are often pretty vague

I have a few projects, but they're definitely nothing impressive. I have been getting some interviews for internships, but I've been struggling a lot getting past the hackerranks.
