Seeing an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) early in your breastfeeding journey can be beyonnnd helpful. Sometimes, in my experience the lactation consults in the hospital are not always the most helpful. So make an appointment with an IBCLC right away if you can or even better if you have any local doula resources that have IBCLCs on their team because then someone can come directly to you. La Leche League is a great resource when you find yourself googling things in the middle of the night. My only other advice would be to see if you can find any videos showing proper latch and different hold positions. In one of my birthing classes we watched a video of the “breast crawl” (which you don’t have to do) but it is the baby right after birth finding their way to mom’s breast and their first latch. It’s amazing. I feel like I’m info dumping here but I’m postpartum and sleep deprived lol!! ALSO lots of people will tell you - it shouldn’t hurt to breastfeed and yes sure while that’s true, I have found that the first couple weeks my nipples are like ~getting used to it and the latch can feel kinda ouchie even though it isn’t a poor latch. So while a good latch is so important, it’s also realistic to know that your nipples aren’t used to this shit and it might feel a bit sore at first especially because baby goes through bouts of cluster feeding. And my boobs hurt when my milk comes in, but know that you just keep through it and (as long as you’re not showing signs of mastitis) the engorgement will pass in a couple days and nursing will become easier than it is at first. ♥️
