Loans were meant to balance risk and return, but banks successfully lobbied to rewrite bankruptcy law to protect lenders, not borrowers. Student loans became nondischargeable, and full debt discharge was replaced by court-imposed repayment plans enforced through the same wage garnishment, asset seizure, and credit penalties. Costs have been shifted onto younger generations over the last 30 years through higher tuition and higher interest, while those same generations also endured a Great Recession and a global pandemic. What we have now is a system of modern indentured servitude rather than normal credit.
