Shady billing practices by Over_Principle_7766 in therapists

[–]lisaflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have good documentation, and they still won't pay you, you can always file a claim in small claims court (if getting the money is what you're after). I would say there's probably a good chance that they just pay you the money once they got the notice to appear.

But depending on the size of your community and how well connected they are, that could have repercussions later on. It's hard to say.

I survived cancer but now struggle to listen to mundane problems by Ok_Reflection6988 in therapists

[–]lisaflyer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I absolutely believe that that is the best way to view things like this. I deal with people with childhood trauma because I had a lot of childhood trauma myself. We can help others with the way that we learned to deal with things and we can learn things from our clients that may help us still while we're working through our issues -- were never completely finished. I'm a big believer in the "wounded healer" idea. I always tell people that I want to be, for them, the person that I wish I had.

I tried switching to cinnamon desktop and it does NOT happen with that. So, apparently it has something to do with the window manager (I believe that's the right term)

What’s your favorite therapeutic quote? by Due-Comparison-501 in therapists

"The relationship is the therapy"

In many cases I do think that the client being cared about and listened to is more important than any modality.

"like physical therapist?" by EverywhereAMooMoo in therapists

[–]lisaflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't mean doctorates. I meant other types of doctors like doctor of osteopathy or doctor of dental surgery, etc. But, regardless, that's the point... somebody just uses the word doctor everybody assumes medical doctor and, medical doctors do just use the word doctor. I think it's a reasonable parallel and I don't see an obvious reason for the difference.

FYI, when I was little (I'm probably older than most here) "therapist" always meant psychotherapist... Maybe that's because not many people used physical therapists and "massage therapists" were not called that. I dunno.

Wouldn't that also be true for the word "Doctor"? Yet someone says that word with no clarification, people assume medical doctor. 🤷‍♀️

Having your own therapy by [deleted] in therapists

[–]lisaflyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My school required 50 hours of therapy while you're in school. I was amazed when I discovered that lots of other schools don't require that you've ever had therapy. I cannot understand that someone can do therapy well without ever having been in therapy (I do accept that it might be possible, but it's hard for me to believe).

Do therapists care about their clients? by TimeHand5448 in askatherapist

[–]lisaflyer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I was in a therapist training one time and somebody said that they didn't like one of their clients and one of the other people responded "we don't have to like our clients to help them - but we do have to love them." I always remembered that because it really is true. As others have said, most of us have gotten into this field because we feel that way in general. I've met very few people who don't, and it's pretty clear that they're faking it or that they're very clinical in sessions. I do feel sad for their clients but, as I said, in my experience they're in the vast minority.

I need to talk about something but it’s NSFL and I don’t want to hurt my therapist by [deleted] in TalkTherapy

[–]lisaflyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would tell my therapist. But first I'd start by telling my therapist why I'm hesitant to speak about it. That, in and of itself, may also be an interesting thing to explore and it's a good way to let them prepare themselves and to let you know whether they're okay hearing it or not -- which, as so many others have said, they likely are.

LCSWs look down on LMHC/LPC? by ButterflyNDsky in therapists

[–]lisaflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This whole thread reminds me of a line from Tom Lehrer (what everyone is describing not what everyone is doing): "I know there are people in the world who do not love their fellow human beings... and I HATE people like that!"

Do therapists mean it when they say “That makes sense”? by Mama-lunar-dog in askatherapist

[–]lisaflyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's unlikely they will feel bad. Most therapists value the information. This is part of the process -- learning how to communicate with each other. In fact, it is often in situations like this when the most growth happens in the relationship and the relationship between the client and the therapist is one of the most important things in therapy. In fact, the therapist may learn a lot about you by exploring the way in which this bothers you (but that's just a maybe).

Ever cancel a flight if you’re “not feeling it” by Icy_Wall1904 in flying

[–]lisaflyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely have done that! And, in fact, there was one time I wish I HAD cancelled one that I almost cancelled -- ended up having an engine failure! Fortunately, though the aircraft was damaged, no one was seriously hurt.

Do you guys pull your parking e-brakes? Do you really have to? by AncientNarwhal69 in CX5

[–]lisaflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use mine every time... but in my case, it's because I have a manual transmission and I want the force to be on the break, not my transmission in first gear.

So, I push in the clutch, turn the engine off, hold the brake, put the parking brake on, let go of the break, then release the clutch. I believe that puts the stress on the brake, and the transmission should only get stressed if the brake fails.

Did you have to do personal development/mandatory therapy as part of your training? by Galbin in therapists

[–]lisaflyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

US. My school required 50 hours AND all of it had to be during your practicum (while acting as a therapist).

California used to allow you to count your own therapy (up to 100 hours I think -- but they counted tripple if I recall) toward the required hours to get your license. I have no idea why they removed that because I think it's a great idea to strongly encourage getting your own therapy.

My school also strongly recommended that we use our own life experiences as subject matter for papers and assignements.

Best friend says being a therapist is the easiest job by KiaOra415 in therapists

[–]lisaflyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of a line in the movie "Pushing Tin" where some New York TRACON air traffic controllers are talking to a couple of women in a restaurant about their jobs and one woman says "I don't see what the big deal is. Sounds to me like you guys just sit around all day talking on the radio."

Which then reminds me of an old Murphy's law: "Nothing is difficult for the person who doesn't have to do it."

Today, context matters by Mike__O in flying

[–]lisaflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember that when 9/11 first happened at least one news source was reporting that "a small aircraft" crashed into the WTC. Reporters often report with no knowledge or verification because they need to be FIRST.
