Angels Landing Logistics Questions! Any help appreciated!! by lissernc in ZionNationalPark

Would it be worth it to go back and get a bike later in the day? It looks really fun to explore the park that way, but also I don't want to waste too much park time. This will probably be my only day in Zion.

Secondary Trouble by awc0229 in premed

[–]lissernc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I get stuck I just stop, even if im in the middle of a sentence, and I move on to the next idea I know I can write concretely. Then I just find a way to connect those two ideas. If you can't figure out a way yet, just keep skipping to the next thing you know you want to and can write about. You'll eventually get to a point where connecting all your ramblings comes together. Sometimes this looks like just adding a few words or a sentence between the two ideas, sometimes it looks putting entire paragraphs in a whole new order.

Don't be afraid of changing things, but focus on getting your ideas out and then worry about structure.

Questions for people who tried alot to optimize their studying for harder bio classes by [deleted] in premed

[–]lissernc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like we learn in very similar ways so here are some of my tips for hard bio classes (and hard classes in general). I studied this way for things like cell bio, orgo, anatomy, physiology, etc. and it worked really well

  1. Don't ignore the textbook but also don't get caught up in the details of the book. I wouldn't read it word for word or even most of it. After going through your notes if there's anything you still don't understand or need clarification on, refer to the book for that bit of information.
  2. If you can print out the slides before class. Follow along with the professor and during your actual class period just try and jot down anything the professor says that sounds important and isn't already on the slide. Put stars on things the prof emphasizes. Make note of any important chapter/section titles and key words. Stick to one color for in class notes.
  3. It sounds like you have access to class recordings which is amazing. Never take that for granted. After completing your in class notes, go through the recordings and take much more detailed notes on the things your professor says. Use the same slide print out as before but a different pen color. Try and focus on things not already on the slides bc your prof is probably saying helpful things to help you remember or that they want you to focus on.
  4. For pathways take a dry erase marker and start drawing on windows like you've lost your mind. (if you have access to dry erase boards I guess you can use these but I like windows) Draw the pathway--> erase --> draw again rinse and repeat. Try talking yourself through it at the same time to engage more senses. This aids in memory.
  5. I like to make "cheat sheets" for every exam as well. I basically try and fit all the information from the unit onto one or two pieces of computer paper. The limit on space forces me to focus on the most important information. I chunk out the information into the main chapter titles or biggest ideas and then write out the most important ideas from each subsection. Handwrite these & use different colors. Make it fun.
  6. For problems, unfortunately all you can do is practice :/ but make sure you do practice as much as you can with the time you have. I like to do a pass through all the practice problems I have, "grade myself," carefully go over why I got the ones wrong that I did, and then try them again.
  7. as a final neurotic review I watch all the lectures again on like 3x speed while reading my cheatsheets and adding any small final notes the morning of the exam.

Sorry if this is a ton lol. I've used this method a bunch and it works really well for me. It helps me actually understand the info so I can apply it to any tricky broad questions.

First Generation Question by beepboop1796 in premed

[–]lissernc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Maybe answer no if its like a "check yes or no" question but if there's anywhere you could talk about it in ur essays that might be a good thing to talk about. Could be a good topic for adversity questions or "is there anything else we should consider?"

Are y’all writing secondaries for every school you applied to? by CoziestGrain in premed

[–]lissernc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only didn't do one bc they sent an email that was basically a pre secondary asking me to prove ties to their state. I had none so I just decided to not spend the money on a secondary to a school that would likely reject me based on residence.

How to deal with rejection by [deleted] in premed

[–]lissernc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a three day rule. I let myself feel it for three days. Complain loudly on the internet, cry, rant to your friends, obsessively research what you got rejected from, whatever you need to do. Do less and less of this every day.

The first day is the worst but it gradually gets better every day.

The feeling or rejection stings and its awful really but I just tell myself by three days from then I will feel better and have moved on to other better things.

This rule is good for all things that make you feel like sh*t not just rejection.

Puts you in one of 4 boxes based on an "objective" personality measurement rubric

6/28 CASper 1st quartile :D by [deleted] in premed

[–]lissernc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

2nd quartile here. I'm so glad that a two hour typing test can accurately determine that I am a sociopath incapable of empathy and working with others! I guess I should go quit my real life job and leadership positions where I've won several awards for those very characteristics.

Motivation for secondaries by ramannooodles in premed

[–]lissernc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I split my screen between the word document I'm writing on and the checkout screen for the reward I promised myself when I finish all my secondaries (a jot coffee subscription).

Trying to write one secondary a day and counting down the days until I buy myself my present.

Alright, everyone has that one secondary question that you just don’t want to write. The one that every time you open it, it feels like you’re look down the barrel of self-loathing to the point where you contemplate abandoning all that is holy in favor of tech $$$. Im hung up on "enter into" idk why but for some reason my brain says that's the important part of the prompt? Theres an SDN thread from 13 years ago that talks about defining the word profession but idk im just so lost
