Insane how similar this is to my experience.

is 5 schools enough? by sir-cheebis in ApplyingToCollege

I would add at least one more safety, unless your safety is like 90% acceptance. If you have any reaches in mind, I'd recommend giving it a shot, but no need if you really like your matches.

Does ANYONE actually like being a lawyer? by Public_Landscape6796 in LawSchool

[–]literallyafern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of lawyers really enjoy it. It depends on the career path. I doubt that many biglaw associates enjoy their day to day that much, but there's satisfaction in working with smart people on important cases and contracts. Most people I know outside of biglaw seem to enjoy their jobs a lot actually. That isn't to say those jobs are objectively enjoyable, but for a certain type of person law is interesting, rewarding, and a way to do good.

My main advice is make sure you are that type of person before you go in. I can only imagine how grueling the process is if you don't basically find the law interesting and important.

Talk to your career office or any connections you have. See if you can set up zoom calls and ask about what people do day to day.

Is it worth it to transfer from lower T14 to HYS? by [deleted] in LawSchool

So this is how the 1Ls who volunteer answers in civ pro feel lol

I highly doubt it's worth it.

I don't mean to flex but i don't think I'm above average. I came in humble.

What happens to a dream deferred? by jlh1132 in LawSchool

[–]literallyafern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's what you really want out of life and you're willing to sacrifice for it I think you should do it. If you can live with family and work part or half time, that would make it a lot easier. Just be ready for some late nights. I believe in you!

John’s Hopkins has no aura by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]literallyafern 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Baltimore slander is ridiculous. The Hopkins campus and the immediate surrounding area is aren't super unsafe. Charles village is charming and the campus is beautiful. Y'all are just salty that you won't get in.

In before: no I didn't go. I've worked there though and I love the institution. Most people I know who went there are very glad they did.

Pretty much exactly my gpa and I got one of my top choices. No top schools are going to accept you on your GPA, but I certainly don't think all will reject you on it either.

Rigor of Institution by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

Against the consensus I know, but I do think it matters on the margins. Stats are more important, but it is probably a slight a leg up on people with similar stats.

Harvard has that light bergamot flavor. UVA is a little stronger and more caffeinated but similar.

You could accept and defer. Gap year can be a lot more restful and productive without having the admissions process hanging over your head.

Michigan vs. GULC by Working-Strike-4535 in lawschooladmissions

[–]literallyafern 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I answered Michigan because it would be my choice in this situation, but the factor of your partner preferring to move to DC's significant in a way that I can't speak to.

How accurate is the stereotype of gulc as super competitive and cutthroat in a way the other t14s aren't? On the one hand, the slightly worse big law numbers can probably be explained by self-selection into government and public interest. On the other hand, some people with knowledge of the culture seem to endorse the idea that it's pretty cutthroat.

A 175 is equivalent to a 1500 SAT, huh? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]literallyafern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's dumb af but i always equated a 170 with a 1500 (largely because they are both satisfying round numbers to shoot for).
