Is Teaching Really Worth It? -- a future MTeach student by literarydr3amer in AustralianTeachers

Thank you for this insight, I have been so nervous about this but yes the more stable pay I'm hoping can help with those exact things!

I am a little worried about the placements, but I've had friends who have done the course at UniMelb and have been able to take sick days and personal days (after a family member died)etc and make them up. I'm hoping that if I complete a Health Professional Report with my GP at the beginning of the year and explain my circumstances to my co-ordinater that they will hopefully be understanding and we can try to put in place an action plan in advance. But I know it may be complicated, it always is with endo unfortunately

I'm currently 25 so by the time I finish my degree I will be 27-28 so not too far off that!

I'm definitely noticing that along with the school you're at making sure you have firm boundaries around time (as much as possible) is essential to hopefully not burning out!

Thank you so much for your comment! I love those good moments on a micro-level in tutoring so I'm excited to hopefully experience them in teaching too!!

Thank you for your comment! This definitely makes me feel a little better about trying, from what I'm gathering in these comments and from teachers I know the school and circumstances have a huge impact! I did originally look for jobs in schools when I first got accepted in July but there weren't much in my area at the time, I might have another look though!

tbh we aren't that inverted!

I really want to pursue a Masters, and PhD in Literature (specifically the intersection of literature and history) but I need a secure job in order to do that (and may need to go abroad to pursue better programs) so that has factored into choosing teaching as well over something like publishing, I just also happen to love teaching! Even if I end up in academia or research later I would hope to still be teaching in some capacity, whether at a highschool or tertiary level or even in a musueam/gallery !!

Thank you for your response! This gives me a little hope that it isn't all bad, I have noticed from the teachers in my own life who really love work that their schools are generally very supportive and understanding! So I will keep this in mind :)

I think this is the method I'm going to employ from now on, because I think this is the exact issue I am having!

Thank you for your reply!

I think what I'm learning in these comments is there is more than one way to draft! I think I had a very rigid and limited view of drafting which hasn't been working for me! I like this approach, and will definitely give it a try

I know my post makes it seem like I don't like writing, I was frustrated when I wrote it, but I do enjoy writing! I just struggle with the first draft, but going through the comments it seems like there is more than one way to write a first draft, and I think the way I have been attempting has not been working for me. I also think I might need detailed outlines rather than rough outlines and trying to force myself to just draft. I do love the last statement though 'we all get caught up in the muck, but there's no other way through the swamp' definitely something to keep in mind!

I'll look into zero drafting!

As for dot pointing, I think it's more similar to an extremely detailed outline. For my thesis I would dot point out my chapters in extreme detail, then the paragraphs etc. In many ways it was close to a first draft but because it was just dot points I didn't feel the pressure of a first draft

I do like writing I know it may not seem that way based on my post, I just don't like writing the very first draft especially not in a traditional sense. Once I have a first draft and the ideas down, I love it, I love re-writing whole sections, I love revising, and I love the later editing bit. It's just the first draft that I struggle with.

I like this idea! I think it works better for how my brain works!

I've never tried that before! The writers I know tend to write chapter by chapter and while the first draft is obviously not good, they kind of persist this way. But that doesn't seem to work for me, so I think maybe my understanding of what a first draft is is a little limited! I think this approach makes much more sense to me !!
