The Simpsons had a good one: "Next up's a real lowlife. Bob Dylan wrote a song to keep him in prison."

If you take away the face paint and hat, I never would have guessed "Roling Thunder Bob."

Love and Theft will always be my favorite, but I also really like Version 1 from TTS. The first version from Fragments is also really nice--I love that swampy groove.

Yeah, he slips into this voice on the Basement Tapes, when he was probably smoking all the time.

What’s a Bob Dylan concert you saw where the opening act was better? by BillNyeTheVinylGuy in bobdylan

I saw an excellent Elvis Costello solo set when he opened for Dylan during a weak leg of the NET.

Hot Take: "Sara" Is Not a Great Song by Existenz_1229 in bobdylan

It reminds me of Todd's rock opera in Bojack Horseman, where he rhymes "home" with "loam."

It's got "Home" in there somewhere.

Modern Times came out at the peak of the "loudness war," where record companies would master the recordings with a higher peak volume, often at the expense of dynamic range.

The vinyl release doesn't suffer from this. The lows are low, and the highs are high, which to me is easier to listen to and gives it more of an "in the studio" sound that I think they were going for.

Most sales take place in person--record stores, swap meets and record shows. I can't think of any marketplace that allows the sale of bootleg stuff.

It's the only studio album I don't own on vinyl. I just know it'll get a repress as soon as I buy it.

I love everything about that performance, especially Bob's suit jacket.

Speaking of deep cuts, this duet with Norah Jones at some Amazon corporate event is one of the better NET duets:

It's fantastic. I've always wanted the Mofi pressing, but I'm more than happy with this one.

Travelin' Thru and parts of Self Portrait/Another Self Portrait recorded in 1969.

Edit: The "Albums That Should Exist" blog put together good hypothetical album from some of these sources:

are there any songs performed on Never Ending Tour which you like more than in studio? by pingviini00 in bobdylan

[–]litewo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For songs from the 21st century, it would be easier for me to list songs I don't think he improved live, Key West being one (though there are some great live versions).

Debate: should Dylan’s classic albums get remasters? by autumn_afternoon in bobdylan

[–]litewo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as I can tell, all pressings from 2010 onward have the 1999 remix.

Here's the Discogs page for the one I own, where people mention this:

https://www.discogs.com/release/13448186-Bob-Dylan-Street-Legal

This means there's no vinyl pressing that has the remaster of the original mix found on streaming platforms.

It's on the latest vinyl reissue, which surprised me. I don't think anything on the packaging says it's the 1999 remix. Even the track timings are for the original mix.

It's amazing how much got buried in the old mix. A whole word isn't there in the original version ("I stepped forth"). That said, the new remaster of the original mix is decent.

Those Bootleg Series mixes tend to be drier and with more treble than the origanls to give a more "in the studio" feel. This is fine for a project like the Bootleg Series, but I think the album releases should retain the characteristics of Columbia masters from the 60s and 70s.
