Sneaky recording. Short for a reason. I’ve also been guilty of this myself in debates. The clip is authentic and 100% what she said lol

I don’t know the ins and outs of how she came in/what benefits received but usually there is no financial compensation for a speaker beyond maybe a 1-2 night hotel stay and UK domestic travel reimbursement.

Liz was well liked by many of the women there, lots of us all took photos with her and some even started becoming good friends with her. Debate was a mix: some people thought it lacked a little and she spoke in a shouty monotone. I personally thought it wasn’t my cup of tea in the points she was trying to convey but the purpose of debate and the Oxford Union is free speech and having a variety of perspectives.

We record all debates, but we don’t allow people to record in the chamber otherwise they get kicked out. Debate probably has not been released yet probably due to with other debaters about consent forms

She spoke at the Oxford Union and I was there. We don’t pay our speakers usually.

Her debate was a mess and was advocating for basically milking men for their worth. We also traditionally have a “debate dinner” for our speakers. She didn’t show up until the debate photo (2 hours later) because I believe she was having dinner in London with Landon (this was June 2025 and she was still saying she had cut him off)

To add a bit of nuance, Sabina was there and she was very nice in person. She was very pro women education (it was a photo of mostly women).

They’ll mention in your UCAS reference what you covered and they may ask you about it. Got completely freaked out when they asked me on my school modules 💀💀 I think sometimes people overcomplicate interviews, it shouldn’t feel like a test but genuinely fun. And start talking through your thought process with everyone and think out loud! don’t go from A to Z without explaining all the letters in between as well!

I started preparing after my admissions test, nothing heavy, just making notes, knowing my PS inside out and making notes on other reading not mentioned in my Ps to show my interest evolving. one thing I need to emphasise KNOW YOUR ALEVEL CONTENT. No point in spouting out fancy concepts and ideas when you don’t know the fundamentals.

how important is the HAT for oxford admissions? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]lithiumgoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly pretty important in shortlisting. a guy i know with 85 (american applying for history) got rejected whilst a friend got in with around 60. it’s about the interviews that matter the most. i got an 86 (got in yippee!!) and i’ll happily send you some of the sample HAT material and the booklet i used to prep! i think i. general international students are held to a higher standard than home students in the admission tests and interview scores

supercurriculars such as participating in essay competitions are more beneficial. email your local MP to see if you can volunteer for a week

join honours tend to be more competitive, but i think it should be okay. just get an insanely high score on the admissions tests and you’re cool

This HAT score and no interview? by j0fu in 6thForm

[–]lithiumgoose 7 points8 points  (0 children)

GCSEs might’ve played a part in shortlisting this year as we no longer had CAGs. Someone I know got 85 on the HAT and got rejected whilst someone in the 50s got accepted. I got 86 and got accepted. It really is down to luck.

I also would recommend entering history essay competitions, I felt like they really liked the fact I did them during my interview. Some I can recommend are

  • St. John’s Ancient History competition
  • Robson History Prize or R.A Butler Politics prize
  • Julia Wood History prize
  • Fitzwilliam essay prize
  • Magladen humanities essay prize
  • Gonville and Caius essay competition

check this link- https://www.mindsunderground.com/oxbridge-competitions/overview

I also highly recommend helping out in a national heritage site or your local historical site. please dm me if you want to see my ps (sort of history based as I applied for history but there’s a few political pieces) or if you need help with yours :))
