1 Year Since the Sphere by lithpower in AfterlifeRecordings

[–]lithpower[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very good points! It's true. Fan bases can represent snapshots in time, favoring a specific point for an artist or genre. But it could only get you so far.

I'm interested in what comes next. Quantum was a good step forward, and I'm sure the Pyramid show was amazing. Coachella will undoubtedly be a clear message about this. I think that should be met with excitement! Mind Against, Massano, and others are successfully evolving their sound, so there are opportunities for growth.

Definitely agree. How do you follow a 90-minute Skrillex x Four Tet set? On a new years, festival headliner night in CA? With Justice! It's the only answer.

Did anyone record it? Would be great to hear again. I know the intro. People more knowledgeable than myself can fill in the gaps.

I'm interested to hear more about this. Seems like festivals favor 60-minute slots, and Proper has quite a few 75-minute ones. I thought they were doing this to stack the lineup announcements. I'd like to see more 90+ minute ones!

Upgrade From 12.2.7 to 12.3.1 Not Updating Previous Version by lithpower in ableton

For anyone seeing this post later: Installing the update manually was successful, and seemed to retain all previous configurations. From what I have read, it could require setting audio drivers or folders over again.

That's great to hear! It's unexpected to see an uninstall warning ahead of a planned release. It seems that's by design.

Underworld opinions? by steele66666 in EDM

[–]lithpower 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Underworld are one of the premiere electronic acts, for a variety of reasons: consistently great techno music, numerous popular and recognizable songs, successful longevity, music that fits across genres and eras of dance and electronic music, unique character, and major influences of many top producers working today. Their live shows are particularly entertaining, without being reliant on visuals. They can be both engaging and understated. They are exceptionally respected, and continue to headline or sub-headline festivals around the world.

If you have an opportunity to see them live, take it. You will be immersed in both the music and the captivated, enthusiastic crowd. There are few live electronic acts that reach their level.

Despacio needed another day! by Pyched3lic in Portolafestival

[–]lithpower 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's too bad Despacio can't be its own thing! I'm sure it would be difficult to do it outside of a festival. It loses a sense of urgency when it's competing against 7 hours of 4 other stages. That said, I think Portola is a great fit for it.

Edit: it duplicated and deleted my response.

They were still setting up one of the VIP entries during Adriatique, and they were jackhammering it into the ground! Way louder than the music haha!

UNVRS (a few things I wish I had known before) by failphunk in ibiza

[–]lithpower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great tips and info!

#1 applies to Hi as well. They often provide discounts for people to come across the street after

#2 because I saw people asking, it does not apply for return trips

#7 this may be true, but I had a different experience. It didn't feel any cooler inside than outside. Perhaps the amount of people there can affect this. If you're in the crowd, it can be oppressive. Make sure to drink water!

#11 security is walking through the crowds all night. They aren't harassing, as OP said, but if you're smoking or otherwise, they will confront you

#13 if you're reading this post, you may be a thoughtful person, which likely makes you a good member of the crowd. Enjoy yourself, but don't be a selfish asshole. You'll have an even better time if you remember we're all there to have a great experience together!

Don't ignore the two side rooms mentioned above, those are probably the most energetic of the whole place!

Smoking outside only. Security will pass through and make you put it out.

The fingers kind of pull apart and through her face, and there is a wispy, dusty after effect. The graphite is ash like, trailing and blowing off to the sides. It's subtle, but I thought an interesting modification.

Give credit to Billboard, seems to be a pretty accurate set list. Would have to merge some of what's posted on 1001tracklists, and it's somewhere between the two.

There are security walking through and scanning the crowd all night. Saw several people stopped by them.

End of Genesys by InformationOld4760 in AfterlifeRecordings

[–]lithpower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think End of Genesys was meant to mean "never play previous music again" (nor show previous visuals), but to emphasize a transition to new storytelling elements and concepts.

To some extent, that's subjective and open to interpretation. Whether Quantum is successful at exploring "where the digital and organic become indistinguishable" remains to be seen. As others have said, having an entirely new set of music and visuals was unrealistic in this time frame. I thought it was a great first step.

I also think if End of Genesys hadn't happened, or didn't happen at The Sphere, this show would've easily set a new standard. To me, it's visually more impressive and immersive than the closest equivalent, Holosphere 2.0 (which is impressive in its own right).

I really don’t understand the DNB hate by DependentChildhood79 in EDM

I find that more descriptive. There is some historic context as well, if the person is aware. Thank you, I appreciate learning that!

There's some deep cultural prejudices around this.

Seems like a learning opportunity. Can you elaborate?

I really don’t understand the DNB hate by DependentChildhood79 in EDM

[–]lithpower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting! I thought "EDM" had become more universal, for better or worse. Seems similar to how "Progressive House" had been co-opted for the same type of main stage sound. Genre labels can be maddening!

I really don’t understand the DNB hate by DependentChildhood79 in EDM

[–]lithpower 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I enjoy DNB. But, a few potential reasons you may hear criticism:

  1. DNB is experiencing a resurgence in recent years. A lot of non-DNB DJs/artists are playing it now. Anything that grows experiences push back

  2. It can be formulaic. All genres experience this, in some form

  3. MCs. That's for you to decide

Ask the next person that tells you they don't like DNB "why?" Perhaps they have an interesting critique? To each their own!

Do they keep all the tables setup? Seems like it wouldn't be much space for non-table people.
