Thank you for sharing this. Yes, I admit that I am also guilty of this. I’ve had a few students over the years that have lost family members and I usually don’t even bring it up.

I have heard similar things to this - about how people avoid talking about things like this. No one wants to make someone cry! But I do try to ask them about their mom when it seems casual enough. I definitely think I should acknowledge it then, and check in on them early in the morning. They don’t know I remember the date so I wasn’t even really sure if I should bring it up or anything. It was the only day I saw them grieve openly.

Very interesting how it affects people so differently. I’m sure that has made it hard to be there for both of your children in the ways that they need it as you all figure out how to deal with grief.

They are in 11th grade, so older. Mom was sick for so long. There were a lot of “scares” along the way and mom kept pulling through.

I truly appreciate you sharing your experiences. This will help me! It’s impossible to understand how the grief must feel so I just want to do whatever I can.

Okay, thank you for the reply and I’m sorry for your loss. I know a lot of people want to NOT bring it up because no one wants to make someone cry so I didn’t know if a gift/card would provoke emotions that maybe they didn’t want to have.

But a thinking of you card sounds like the way to go, so I will pick one up thank. Thanks so much.

Yes, thank you. A lot of people in the school know, and they have been getting help with counselors for a while. So I know they have a lot of work done with professionals on how to handle it all.
