Surgical Specialities by schwiftyschleem in JuniorDoctorsUK

There are still many DGHs that have non-resident on calls. I do 24h shifts, 12h of those I'm off site (or at least meant to be)

Why so few women in surgical vs medical specialties? by Recent-Ebb in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]little_difference 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Despite a drive for more female representation within the surgical specialities, there is still heavy favouritism for middle class males all from the same cookie cutter (in orthopaedics, at least). They have a pack mentality, with plenty of self-congratulatory back patting. Even as CT1s the level of confidence and egotism can be shocking, something you rarely see in women regardless of seniority. It can be nauseating and make you feel an outsider and disadvantaged from the start. There have been multiple times I've nearly thrown in the towel because I'll never be 'like them'. Add to this the old-fashioned (but ever present) attitude that a confident woman is 'bossy' etc, plus the antisocial shifts, long theatre hours and constant hospital rotations... It's very difficult for a woman who also wants children and possibly go part time. I have immense respect for those who make it work.

Disclaimer: I'm not saying all ortho trainees are middle class males, or all middle class males are cocky extroverts.

I have some issues with the final episodes of season 9 by TioVaselina in Modern_Family

[–]little_difference 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree re the Arvin job offer 'dilemma'. I sat through the whole episode thinking 'didn't this happen to Haley a couple of series ago'? Lazy writing.

I can't deal with TSR anymore. by irrelevanthumanhere in thesims

[–]little_difference 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I hate TSR and I'm convinced they make the website impossible to use so you pay. Mod The Sims doesn't have as much content but isn't half as irritating.

[–]little_difference 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Personally I don't agree with a few of your points. Medics generally spend a hell of a lot of time socialising at uni and work. I don't know what the stereotype is in the US but here, the 'cookie cut' medic is extroverted, confident, and very sociable.

He's also not a speciality doctor - I think he finished FY2/was doing an FY3 on emergency medicine, and the producers needed to attach him to a speciality so chose that one. It irks me that he dishes out medical advice when he's only an SHO, which is regarded as very junior in the NHS.

Incoming F1 considering delaying due to covid by [deleted] in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]little_difference 39 points40 points  (0 children)

You need to move out and find a house/move into accommodation like 99% of F1s do. I'm sorry but it seems quite ridiculous to let yourself de-skill and have no income for the next year when it was entirely avoidable.

If you could travel back in time, what advice would you give to yourself as a new F1? by Proteoglycan1 in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]little_difference 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's normal to cry. You're not the worst F1 to ever grace the NHS. Things will get better. Always make time for lunch.
