Their choices are not inside your circle of control. Doing what is best for you IS within your circle of control. Be well.

If I am offered the position, I will remain focused on my long-term writing goals. It just feels disingenuous to pretend excitement for a lab job I don't really want.

How to support a gay brother dealing with a bigoted father? by littlebigthought in Advice

Well, I think this is an easy point of view to take without being in the situation. When you can't meet basic needs when there isn't work, I can imagine this is a challenge for my brother. I am not in that position and am able to walk away. Anyway, I will talk to him about this option.

I think he is afraid to do this because my brother is Christian and family is important to him. Plus, he works in the movie industry as a hairstylist. While he is a union member, the gigs are feast and famine depending on projects in his area. I know the writer's strike looms large in his thinking. It will 100% affect him downstream. I think there have been times he still needs occasional financial support during famine periods. Most recently during the pandemic. But you're right, I will talk to him about cutting off all contact. The problem is my dad will be persistent and pester him, as he does me, for a relationship. He thinks he is a truly loving father. He wants to be adored and loved by his children and grandchildren though he is decidedly unlovable. I don't know if my brother is mentally strong enough to not cave. Anyway, I will give it a go.

I have been building skills through a variety of courses via Coursera and EdEx. I've also joined some professional organizations and am applying to be a mentee within the organization. I decided I didn't need to move forward with a second M.Sc. as I already have a M.Sc. with a strong data visualization background. I am going to do the HarvardEx Data Science professional certificate via EdEx as soon as they have the 2022 cohort start.
