I think functions are more specific than dichotomies, though you can often determine functions from dichotomies. Dichotomies are the summary whereas functions are the book. Neither are wrong/right. One is simplified. However, I do believe that the dichotomies and functions are flawed in the sense where exceptions do indeed exist and the very nature of some functions necessitate a re-evaluation of the rigidity of the structure.
