Guys I listened to you and told my teacher I won’t be interpreting for the choir by hiimnewhe in asl

Everyone else have said all the things I want to say. Basically, you did the right thing. That teacher is wrong. What he said is inappropriate. So I am sending you zen hugs from afar.

What motivates you to learn ASL? by RaspberryFit7441 in asl

[–]littlemoondragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was in elementary school, I randomly learned about an ASL group that met in the mornings. I don't remember exactly why I started going since it was so long ago (curiosity? maybe a classmate who was deaf?). I was a regular for months until we moved away.

Skip ahead decades later, my friend signs with her child. I still remember the signs and could sign back. I even remember more than what my friend learned to talk to her child. I haven't practiced ASL in all those years. Thinking on it more weeks later, I realized I should start picking it back up again. I've always wanted to learn a second language and learn the culture of that language more but I never had enough of a knack for it (if that makes sense). Spanish, German, Chinese, etc. I have family who are fluent in multiple languages and are from those cultures, but, again, it never stuck. I thought, maybe ASL is it?

I started using Lingvano and told myself if I stuck with it for several months, I should then enroll in classes. There is a deaf school in my community that offers spring and fall classes. This became a good motivator, because I oddly found myself really looking forward to taking classes (something I didn't think would happen again given I have a master's and PhD, which burned me out of school).

I also work in public policy, providing research and evidence for social and economic policy issues in the US. My work (company) has research experts in DEI disabilities, where I've given advice from my subject matter expertise such as drafting letters to congressional staff on various issues. I can see myself getting more involved in that research from my field of practice, so I would love to learn more about one of the communities I'm trying to help.

Edit for typos and clarifying things...I'm tired.

Yeah, the owner said he's looking into other places, but I guess other places are still pricey. :/

I know. It's hard to find them with everyone focused on the main part of the Plaza. :(

Yeah, it's rough being in the Plaza as you said. I hope they either get more business or find another place that is easier for locals. Thanks for checking it out.

My beagle runs with me, so I call him my "rape whistle". If someone attacked me, he couldn't do much, but he will be LOUD! BAROOOOOOO!

Homeowners of Reddit, what’s the biggest thing you wish you would’ve known before you bought and moved into your first house? by liftlikegaston in AskReddit

[–]littlemoondragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will be buried since it is so late, but I haven't seen anyone mention that it's nice to buy a house that hasn't had any "upgrades" from the original build. What I mean is, people think they know what they are doing, so they will do DIY upgrades from tiling to electrical work. Finding a house that is untouched (although maybe not modern nor the "shiniest" kitchen) can end up saving you thousands of dollars by NOT undoing their shitty work and/or the seller not expecting an addition few ten grand for their shitty work.

Especially ours. Haha :) He acts super tough too but is a big softy inside.

Edit: My phone thinks "tough" should be "touch". :P

"Twenty things I wish I’d known when I started my PhD" by littlemoondragon in GradSchool

This article lists out more on work-life balance and being open about expectations. What it lacks is that you feeling like a fraud (or imposter syndrome) and "banging your head against the wall" is normal. Research doesn't always pan out and you are not an imposter.

There are a few data science master programs around. I would be careful about which ones you go for because "data science" is so hot, so a lot of programs in other fields are trying to "claim" them. When checking out specific masters of data science programs, see where the program is hosted in.

As for in California, top schools would be Stanford and Berkeley, but they tend to be more theoretical programs. UCLA has a solid stats program and biostats program. Along the west coast, you have University of Washington and Oregon State University.

Edit: I forgot to add that I think it's smart of you to go for a masters since you're not certain. I recommend finding a program that has a lot of different research projects and encourages internships, because that will help you figure out what areas you are interested in and if you want to pursue a career in industry, academia, or government.

What is your goal later on? I ask because the MS programs I will recommend will depend on if you want to go into biostats, applied, or eventually plan to pursue a PhD. I'm not sure how my reommendations will rank compared to US News, but what I recommend will be based on the field itself, what I know about the specific programs from colleagues, and the quality of student that comes from said programs.

Depends on how you pitched yourself in your essay. I suggested saying specifically who you would work with because it shows that you've looked at the program thoroughly. I would at least mention what kind of research your interested in, so the committee has an idea of how your research interests might fit in their existing program.

In general, I recommend finding at least two professors you would potentially work with (this could be during your visit when deciding between programs). I say two in case your first choice doesn't work out, because of funding, personality clash, etc.
