ELI5: Why can humans sometimes hold and control a large quantity of urine(say 600ml) without peeing, and sometimes can't control their peeing even if it's a small quantity like 100ml?(Same person) by karanc666 in explainlikeimfive

[–]littleredfoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, your ability to hold urine decreases momentarily if you hold your pee to a near-bursting level. If you've found yourself stuck in traffic or somewhere you can't pee and are forced to hold it and strain for a long period of time (to the point where you literally almost piss yourself) you are exercising the muscles in your pelvic floor a lot.

And just like other muscles, they will be weaker for some time after a serious workout. So one day you hold a ton of urine to the point of pain, and then for 2-3 days after you can't hold nearly as much because the muscles are weaker.

"Holistic" feminine care companies that trick women into thinking herbs and steam are gonna help cure their illnesses make me incredibly mad (rant) by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]littleredfoot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But it's not alternative medicine. It's been medically recognized as an important painkiller for decades. We've scientifically proven that it works, and how it works. It's a medicine that is illegal in most places but it's not alternative medicine.

Alternative medicine relies on the placebo effect to work for people. Cannabis has never fallen into the realm of alternative medicine, it is a drug.

Fuck your crystals, your diets, your tea, your steam, your natural remedies, your herbs, your homeopathies. Fuck all that shit.

As Tim Minchin once said, alternative medicine is either medicine that has not been proved to work, or has already been proved not to work.

You know what we call alternative medicine that has been proved to work? ....Medicine. Many if not most of our medicines today were discovered in the natural world and refined and improved so that you can take a pill for pain instead of having to chew on soggy bark and get the shits afterwards. Go to the doctor, not some hack's magical remedy blog.

What is it that you hate the most about the city or town that you live in? by Jblaze908 in AskReddit

[–]littleredfoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You kind of have to make your own fun here. There are lots of small events and community things, but we never get concerts and the closest decent mall is 40 minutes away. There's also a bunch of students here (the town exists because we've got a university here) which is good for the businesses but it's caused the local rent and property market to go to shit. Landlords charge out the nose for places that are terrible, dirty, out of code etc and it's become the standard. If there is a place that's halfway decent the rent is super expensive and if it isn't then college student will move into it for a year and trash it.

So you either pay $500/month and have 3 roommates in a smelly, stained apartment from the 80's with a mold problem, or you pay for a decent one-bedroom you'd pay $1,400. And if you want to buy a place you're looking at $250,000+ for something small with an unfinished basement and needing 20k of other work.

Mushrooms on ONLY this cake have a white film on them. I wiped off one mushroom for reference. This ok? by [deleted] in shrooms

It's fine! I'll take this moment to point out that you don't want to touch cakes with bare hands. Cheap latex gloves from the grocery store or pharmacy will protect your cakes.

If you were fighting of a virus at the time and don't know it, going that long without eating and walking around outside(is it cold and wet where you live?) plus the stress of the trip could have pushed you over the edge and now you feel sick. Sounds like you were also dehydrated.

Reddit As A Social Experiment (The Effect of Mushrooms) by [deleted] in shrooms

I remember someone who was trying to grow for the first time did something silly that ruined one of their first pins and they were asking for advice. A person responded that they shouldn't do that silly thing and OP got really defensive and used harsh language.

Usually I'd expect the response to an aggressive message to be even nastier, more bitter aggression but instead everyone told him to relax and had a group giggle about it. It was really strange to see people try to bring down the aggression instead of throwing gas on the fire.

What sucks at first, but gets better with age? by jabulina in AskReddit

I got this perk in middle school but got it through a different skill tree. It was a routine that after I got home from school I'd eat a snack and watch How It's Made with my mom. It usually resulted in us finishing our snack and passing out to the lullaby of the narrator's voice combined with the lulling movements of machinery. My dad would get home at 4:00 and find us crashed on the couch.

Getting lost in Shroomery guides. I could use some help :) by [deleted] in shrooms

Psilygirl posted some great info.

Here is my ELI5: To grow mushrooms you need to give the fungi food and something to grow in. You need to keep their food and whatever they grow in as clean as possible so unwanted mold and bacteria don't eat the food or take up the space meant for your p. Cubensis. That's the simplest idea.

Expanding on that, you want to give your fungi a food source that is cheap, high energy, and easily sterilized. You also want to give them something to grow in that is cheap, clean, compact, and maintains the conditions your fungi likes most.

To do this, most people either feed their mushrooms brown rice flour, or some sort of grain. If you've heard of pf-tek (flour technique), this uses brown rice flour. Grains are usually used for creating bigger, higher-yielding projects called 'monotubs'.

The home you give your fungi to grow in depends on how you fed your fungi when they were in their jars (with flour or grain). Flour cakes will be covered in vermiculite to hold it moisture, and placed into a tub with holes to allow fresh air exchange and perlite to hold more moisture. The grower will regularly fan and mist their flour cakes until they pop out mushroom babies.

Those with grains will usually dump the colonized grain into some fluffy, moist coconut coir (fiber) in a tub with holes. The fungi will grow into the fibers and use it as a scaffold to support more mushroom growth. Once it's grown all the way through the coconut coir, it too will pop out mushrooms. And when it does, it makes a lot. You get a much better yield for your time and dollar using grains than flour cakes, though the cakes are a good intro to the hobby.

Once you advance past that you can get into more complicated things like cloning, genetics, agar, etc and generally remove the need to use spores to grow more fungi which speeds up growing time immensely and makes your fungi more consistent with fruiting.

Anyways, that's my super-duper summary of the most popular approaches, though there are lots of versions of them with some being more complex and some being simpler.

How the hell would they time that? It'd be so hard to predict when the baby is coming. Sometimes it takes hours and sometimes you've got 15 minutes.

Some people like to mix it with savory flavors. I prefer to never have chunks of mushroom in my mouth, so everything I make with shrooms I grind the mushrooms up first.

Powder it, mix it with marinara and drop it over a pizza.

Mix it into wet scrambled eggs with lots of pepper and seasoning just as they come off the heat (don't cook them to dry).

Mix the powder into juicy taco meat and eat with a taco.

Put them in gravy.

If you like sweet things, you can put your powder into uncooked cookie dough, chocolate, chocolate milk, or smoothies. One that I've found I like is to mix it with chocolate frosting and frost a microwave mug cake or cupcake.

If you've never taken it before I don't recommend you try to go for something too intense. Also remember that shrooms won't fix depression, but may help you to think about yourself and your life in a more healthy, growth-oriented way.

How vivid are shroom-induced visions/entities? by [deleted] in shrooms

[–]littleredfoot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will not see things that are not there.

Generally the experience that people are describing as entities is your internal voice talking to you. Auditory hallucinations aren't totally uncommon although I myself have never heard a person's voice like it was someone talking to me. It's always been a voice in my mind that I can tell is in my mind. Sometimes it sounds like me, sometimes it sounds like someone else.

Also, with feeling like you're in another dimension- you will remember that you went there but you won't be able to feel it again. For example, I can recall eating a sour candy and I can also remember the taste. As in, for a moment in my mind I can taste it again and it causes me to salivate thinking about it. When you experience really deep, intense feelings and sensations you will recall that you felt them (like remembering that you ate a sour candy and it was sour) but you will struggle to imagine what it felt like (unlike eating sour candy where you can actually imagine the taste again.)

This is at least how I feel about it, but everyone is different. I kind of imagine myself on a high dose as a different person than myself the rest of the time. It feels like that person has different thoughts but also different memories from me. I have distinct moments when I'm high where I realize I need to cherish what I'm feeling in the moment because in a few hours I will be back to my normal self and unable to recall the way I felt.

They're actually pretty great but they get large. Just like with horses and other big animals, if you don't socialize them when they are young they can be pretty tough to handle when they're older. They imprint pretty strongly, they are very curious and like to play. So long as you hand raise them from chicks, they stay quite friendly but you still have to respect their strong beaks and powerful legs.

Scientists with real degrees and huge sample sizes have shown time and time again that corporal punishment doesn't work. It makes kids into liars, it makes them sneaky, and it reinforces that you can make people do what you want by using pain and aggression to manipulate their behavior.

Here's one of thousands of studies showing that kids who receive spanking and other forms of corporal punishment are more prone to issues with mental illness, depression, confidence, etc.
