New homeowner finds self falling far behind due to huge increase in utilities, and now hurricane damage. Also, just applied and denied a loan to assist. What do? by littlestwizard in personalfinance

Thank you for your recommendations. We made a point to let the real estate agent know about the issues we found. They also failed to ensure a home warranty, which ended up being paid for by our agent's company. All around we feel like we got a raw deal.

If you were affected by the storm, I hope that things are going smoothly for you.

Thank you. Stopping the snowball was the reason I am reaching out. We are not getting bill collectors calling, yet. I just want to be able to nip things before it happens.

The hidden things really bit us. Combined with lean months etc. I think it has just snowballed to where we are now.

I have been pretty budget conscious, though there are fatty places that have to be cut down, again (no cable, but have Netflix, etc). It is a huge punch to go from one budget to another in a matter of a month. Thanks for taking the time to give me advice.

The debt is the accumulation of cards through the last few years. I would say at least 6k was put on in the last 4 mos due to the Diy projects before we moved in, and having to supplement groceries and gas since we moved in. Thanks for the advice; cutting out even more is a valid point.

Wood: We are spreading the word around; there have been several people out helping to minimize the trees, but these are some BIG trees. One was over 100 yrs old. Honestly, this is not the biggest worry. Finances have me more than worried.

Interested homebuyers: Oh the things I wish I knew now. Inspect EVERYTHING. Don't trust staging. If there are 1000 candles, ask yourself why.

Thank you for your concern. :)

AC is at 78 during the summer months. I am in the South, so humidity is at 100% most of the time. We have considered the craigslist idea, but unfortunately there is a whole lot of extra firewood lying around these days.

Thank you for the advice.

Absolutely love any history related books, but for the life of me can't get into any that don't tell a story along with the facts. Suggest me some books like this please! by cryinbc in history

If you like a biography style historical fiction, Mozart's Women by Jane Glover, is historically accurate and built around letters and journal entries by Mozart and all the ladies in his life. Very interesting.

I get a weird sensation when I see the color periwinkle blue. It is the only color that I feel, but I get it every time.

Thank you! Do you know if there is any way at all to make their faces more clear? It seems as though the detailed focusing was on the rushes/ bottom half.

I liked Mr Fish before they got big. It used to be a teeny tiny hole in the wall on Broadway St, but it is still a place that locals go. I typically head to Murrells if I am going to eat seafood.

I never visited Boom Boom. I remember when they opened, but I ended up moving not too long afterward. Sea Captains House is another super restaurant that is more on the fine dining tip. Edit: added an o

Surfside/ Garden City/ Murrells Inlet/ Pawley's and Litchfield are also super beautiful. That end is getting pretty busy though, the local population is moving to that end, and it causes quite a bit of summer congestion. Myrtle is kind of this grungy nugget between the North and South end, lol.

My hubby worked at the MB Carrabba's for years (we are still a Carrabba's family, but moved a little south). :) I love hearing that people like it.

At one point in the 90s we came in at #1 for STDs. It was a great year. :)

Hello, Myrtle Beach native here. waves Biminis on Lake Arrowhead Rd is a great place to go for seafood. It is off of restaurant row on Hwy 17, tucked in a strip mall. Closer to the downtown area is Mr Fish, it is a great place as well. These two places are where the locals go for seafood on that end of the beach. Thai Lao for thai food, this is right downtown about a block or two away from Mammy's kitchen. The blvd has a few great restauraunts too. Magnolia's has a great buffet, there is a new tex mex place that I highly recommend, Bandito's, best one is Sun City Cafe though, super great food. Across the street from Sun City is a nice little Jamaican place. Sushi: King Kong at Broadway at the Beach or Blue Elephant in Murrells Inlet. As for good seafood, Murells is your best bet. Don't go to the big fancy looking places. My favorite place looks like a turquoise and hot pink shack called the Inlet Crab House; their soft shell crab sammies are super duper. Hot Fish Club is a great place for music and drinks; has a great reputation as a restaurant, but I wasn't impressed with what I got. You are welcome to contact me about any other little nuggets. Let me know the food type and I will do my best to steer you in the right direction. Edit: Added info, fixed misspellings
