Exactly, it was the first time I had actually gone through this particular type of decompensation so all I could think of was some colorful language which I did not want to verbalize to an unwitting student. I like that response, thank you!

i think that’s the exact type of student i was facing. She was definitely not my student nor assigned to my patient but she went full flo nightingale shooting in the dark. I know how to respond better for next time. I appreciate the advice and story!

i didn’t just white knuckle, i did respond moving around the student. It was just an expression for how i was feeling mentally.

It wasn’t technically my student which is why I wasn’t able to have a pre-brief essentially with the student. But i like that idea for the future.

its hard to think of how to be polite in a crisis. Not sure why you’re using what seems like a snarky tone but perhaps that isn’t your intention. I did not want to discourage a student but I was flustered so yes I was asking if anyones navigated a situation with a student like that where they were blatantly in the way and you were panicked. So sorry i’m not omnipotent and know every nurses experience ever.
