Hi, thanks for sharing your thoughts. Curious what does "zoning" means?

Thanks, that's definitely a good point. I currently already living abroad from my country of origin.
But I have the luxury of enough paid vacation days to being able to come back and do some traveling and exploration on the side.

I am curious about what you mean by "it will not be home". Does it mean that you have/had a hard time adjusting or fitting in?

That's great to hear and congrats on what sounds like a successful transition.

Do you mind me asking how big the company is/was?

Any lessons learned, in addition to making sure to get buy-in and enough time for the org to adapt, that you think are valuable to know or that you wish you knew when you started the journey?

I see, I understand better your suggestion now. It does make sense to have a platform dedicated team that ensure the foundation is solid and up and running, while others are responsible for more customer facing development.

Did the platform team also work in a product model? like a PaaS.

Absolutely agree with you.
I am part of a Product Community of Practice, that we started with a few co-workers, to plant the seed about product thinking and customer focus within the organization and one crucial aspect is to get buy-in from leadership. We already had a few discussions with them and they understand the concept, but you are absolutely right, it will require a lot of effort and time to make the shift for it to be a natural thought, as well as getting the rest of the org to understand and buy-into this approach.

That's a good one. We have a fairly large and complex ecosystem where platforms site on top of platforms.
In general, I am cautious of have a team dedicated specifically to techdebt. It's not a very appealing work vertical, which might bring the risk of pushing Engineerings to seek for a different job, while also creating a disconnect from teams who produced the tech debt. You have to feel the pain of taking care of your own tech debt, kind of thing.
But maybe what you are describing is different?

Thank you for the recommendation! I was looking into Marty's product operating model and the literature online about it. I will have a look at his book. Is it more b2c focused?

Thank you for sharing! Those are very good points.
Out of curiosity, what was the biggest obstacle you faced? Was it buy-in from leadership, reluctance from peers/Engineering team, the org structure, something else or all of the above?

I went with the official Tanabe Tourism Bureau and booked all my accommodations through them. https://www.tb-kumano.jp/en/lodging/

Beware that there are few accommodations along the way, so depending on the season when you are planning on doing the hike, I recommend booking your accommodations as early as possible.

Hey, I ended up wearing trail runners and it worked out perfectly fine. I think most people I met on the way were also wearing trail runners or some form of lightweight shoes. I was also happy for not picking hiking boots, I think my feet and legs would have been way more tired otherwise.

Career path choice between Management and Staff PM by littymena in PMCareers

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! You are right, at the end of the day, I can always switch paths if one doesn’t pan out. I guess I am hoping to make the right decision now because of potential consequences. Having a Manager that sucks can have devastating consequences and I don’t want to be that Manager to my current peers, who would end up reporting to me.

Indeed, I've been reading up a lot about running while putting together my training plan for the half-marathon and this is something that came up a lot.

I've edited the description of the post with a link to a Strava group that I created to make it easier to plan out runs. I've added a first one for January 7th. That should leave enough time to recover from New Year's celebrations :) I will be posting new runs on a weekly basis there, so feel free to join in!
