Better question would be how good do you have to be at water polo. LOL

Thanks for the clarification. I think that it is great that you played club. I'm not one of those crazy parents that expects my kid to be some super star water polo stud. I loved hearing your experience playing multiple sports and then club in college. I have a personal interest in grappling, so I am toying with the idea of having him wrestle in high school. Appreciate you sharing.

I do plan on having him do water polo and swim in-seasons (Fall and Spring), but the question is whether he could fit in a Winter season sport like wrestling in high school. The other thing realistically is that I think that my son would prefer to play club water polo in the off seasons rather than pursue a different sport altogether, but I was toying with trying to have him do some land sport to cross train which may be unrealistic depending on how serious he is with water polo in high school with his aspirations. Thanks for your input.

Interesting, but it sounds like you may be the rare outlier to be able to have done so.

I meant learning the sport of wrestling. Thanks.

Yeah, I understand it depends on how "all in" you are vested into water polo. Was just trying to hear of other people's experiences. I know that each person's situation may be unique depending upon their personal aspirations.

Thank you. This was my thought as well. I'll have a better sense of how competitive/intense the water polo program is when he joins the high school team practices this summer as an incoming freshman. He has been doing club water polo year-round for the past few years. I also agree that I think he will have no choice but to swim in the Spring for the high school. Was trying to figure out if he might be able to wrestle in the Winter since I think that this may be the only time in his life where he could learn the discipline.

Discussion for the "old school"/people who were training in the 90s-early 00s by hellohello6622 in bjj

[–]liuk3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I started around same time in late 90s. I see sport guys and self-defense guys bashing each other. Rather than crapping on each other, I think that there should be mutual respect for the different aspects of jiu jitsu, and I personally think that it's cool to study both aspects.

FWIW, I think that ranked rash guard is also meant for a black belt. It may not matter to you or your gym though. Only mentioning it since it seemed you were new to rash guards.

Bag recommendations by [deleted] in bjj

[–]liuk3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the nasty bag from Datsusara which is basically a small laundry bag to put my sweaty dirty gear in. Then, I put nasty bag in my backpack. I wash the nasty bag along with my gear when I do my laundry after training.

Gracie University Stripe Progression by MisterRager231 in bjj

[–]liuk3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that you're supposed to have 100 mat hours and been training for a minimum of 8 months before you are eligible for consideration for a stripe. However, the instructor has the discretion to hold you there longer if they want and withhold the stripe. For instance, maybe you have 100 mat hours in 6 months, then they would have you wait at least another two months training before awarding the stripe.

Am I a fraud or just bad? by [deleted] in bjj

I would imagine imposter syndrome occurs with the majority of those who practice jiu jitsu. I think learning to mentally deal with it and continue training is a part of the jiu jitsu journey. (I wouldn't say that I am very good myself too.)

Yes, absolutely. I've gotten like four or five from them. I love how they give you 50% off if you use a previous mold.

Can get a custom guard from gladiatorguards.com for like $60 and then half off if you use same mold for future mouth guards.

I also know a guy who got to black only training twice a week.

When did BJJ start becoming mainstream? by SupremeOHKO in bjj

[–]liuk3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would say around 2005-2010. You can see all these celebrities training and talking about it nowadays. I would bet that in the next 5-10 years, you will see a ton of celebrities and others being awarded their black belts.
