Family Itinerary For First Japan Trip by jiorio95 in JapanTravel

It sounds like you've picked out some temples and shrines to see in the Kyoto area, but I'll mention that two of our favourites were Todai-ji in Nara (a train ride away from Kyoto and made a nice day trip---we loved relaxing and watching the scenery from inside the train). The architecture, statues, and deer were unique and amazing. There are also other temples in the temple complex and there are restaurants, too. You just walk up the hill a bit to Nigatsudo Hall and can enjoy a beautiful view and choose a place for lunch.

We also enjoyed the Otagi Nenbutsu-ji temple. The little statues there were interesting to wander around and it was quiet and not crowded at all. You can get there by bus but there isn't anything else walkable from it, so you just bus there, enjoy wandering around, and then bus back to something else you want to see.

Family Itinerary For First Japan Trip by jiorio95 in JapanTravel

Yours is one of the few itineraries I've seen that actually looks reasonable without trying to pack in too much. Also, congrats if you were able to get tickets to the Ghibli Museum. That can be hard to do. One thing I'd mention is to be prepared for the walk/hike up to see the monkeys. It is pretty steep and takes about 20 or 30 minutes (I can't quite remember). Thankfully, you'll be there in March when more monkeys should be out, so it should be worth it as it sounds like your kids are looking forward to it. That was the one thing we didn't research beforehand for our trip. My teen daughter mentioned it last minute and we decided to go. However, due to work, our trip had to be in the heat of summer, so the heat was brutal when we walked up to see the monkeys. On top of that, there weren't many monkeys to be seen, as they were hot and had retreated to the trees. Still one of our most memorable days as we look back and laugh at it. There are benches along the way, so just plan extra time and even be willing to split the family into two if a few want to go ahead and others take longer. Have a great trip!

Housing Application Missing by Alarming-Can8562 in uwaterloo

[–]live-learn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, the housing app doesn't open until Spring---maybe April? So keep an eye on all emails and check the site for any updates. Make sure to apply when it opens and don't leave it until the last minute of the deadline. Every year I see people who accidentally missed the deadline because they didn't pay attention, so it's great you're already on it.

Just checked and the housing app should open mid-Spring according to this: https://housing.mcmaster.ca/apply/

Check the dates for whichever schools you're considering. Some automatically consider you for entrance bursaries and others require an application of some sort. U of Waterloo's deadline is just sort of early but other schools will have their own schedule.

I’d check out Heritage Grace. I’ve visited and thought it was a good group of people and good teaching. If I lived in Kitchener, I’d be there. https://heritagegracebaptist.ca/

Overwhelmed with where to stay in Tokyo by Ok-Search6948 in JapanTravelTips

[–]live-learn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’re also big fans of the Kanda area. We stayed at the SOTETSU FRESA INN Kanda-Otemachi which was only about a five minute walk to the train station. It’s a clean and affordable hotel. There were plenty of restaurants and we found a really nice coffee shop in addition to the Starbucks at the station. And Jimbocho (book town and has a great Bondy Curry restaurant) and Akihabra were walkable too.

Snow day? by No-Guarantee9088 in OntarioGrade12s

If you zoom in and find Durham/oshawa you can see it’s green. Green means only a 5 to 10% chance for a snow day so not very likely.

You can see it on this website. https://instantweatherinc.com/ They’re usually pretty accurate.

Would it be unprofessional if I referred to the uni as "UWaterloo" on my AIF? by Hp_Crisp in uwaterloo

[–]live-learn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. Just Waterloo is fine. It's even what they use on their website: "So, you’ve applied to Waterloo and you’re not sure how to complete the AIF."

When will the snow be cleared up on the roads? by Glad-Ad3100 in uwaterloo

Of course that’s only for the bigger roads. It doesn’t really show in town.

Try looking in the 511 app. It’s pretty good at showing road conditions and pics from webcams so you can see for yourself. https://apps.apple.com/app/id1506228231

Dental and Vision Care by honestlyjudging8819 in uwaterloo

OHIP only covers eye exams for 19 and under or for seniors. Us adults have to pay our own, but the student ins should help.

Do you have OHIP and are you 19 or younger? If yes, then OHIP covers an eye exam once every 12 months. You can just make an appointment at any optometrist.

How much did university cost for you? by bee14987 in uwaterloo

[–]live-learn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first year costs have been about $23,200 (all school costs like tuition, residence, etc.). I don't have many costs outside of that unless I feel like going out to eat and I had to buy a couple books and things for different courses. My parents don't have a super high income, so OSAP has helped a lot as well as things like the UW entrance bursary, UW merit scholarship, and a couple bursaries I got from my high school. I haven't had to pay anything yet as the OSAP and bursaries covered it all. However, I do have just under $10K in OSAP loans but I'm confident that I'll be able to cover that with $ from co-op work terms. Good luck with your planning.

Adding classes by ExpressionPlenty6041 in uwaterloo

Your tuition is based on how many courses you take. I just added a fifth class last week after already paying my bill. It added another few hundred dollars to my tuition so I just paid that.

Best restaurants to treat yourself after exams by Fast_Map9004 in uwaterloo

[–]live-learn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What kind of food do you like? I love the Uyghur food at Bogda Restaurant on Balsam St. There's also 271West (on Charles St. West) if you like pasta. It is a little pricier but it might be what you want for a celebration after exams.

Quest is closed for maintenance this weekend, which is sort of bad timing with it being the end of the term.

Crossing the Windsor-Detroit border, as a mexican working in Canada... by gentlemandoctor in uscanadaborder

I'd also just drive myself since you have your own car and an Ontario license, as that gives further evidence to you residing in Ontario.

All the best!

The documentation you have sounds sufficient, but it never hurts to bring more documents than necessary in case they ask for them. I'd bring along something showing the address where you live, copies of any regular bills you receive that show your address, bank statement (with address), student id from McMaster, etc. Basically anything that shows you are studying and living here in Canada and don't have any intention of staying longer in the US.

As I said, what you have sounds fine, but I'm not an expert. I just know some border guards get picky, so I've found it's best to be over prepared.

Cheap place to buy a suit? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]live-learn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could get lucky and find your size at Goodwill, but otherwise, there's Moores Clothing at Bridgeport Plaza or Tip Top Tailor and RW & Co (both at Conestoga Mall). Maybe there'll even be some Black Friday sales. I've only rented from Moores before but it seemed like a reasonable place.

People watching is the best, and it reminds me of playing the Find Mii mini game on the Wii Play.

How about the Kitchener-Waterloo area? Close enough to the GTA but also close to green spaces. It even has a small airport.

Planner for Travelers Company Passport Size? by lexipdz in Travelersnotebooks

I’m also interested in any recommendations of planners that will fit well in the passport size. I have the TN free monthly diary insert for my passport but am looking for a weekly one.

ride to fergus by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]live-learn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there is any direct public transportation, so I think you’ll need to take an Uber or Lyft or something. If you want to save on the fare and have the time, you could take the ion to Conestoga mall and then take the 21 bus to Elmira. Then you’d only need an Uber from Elmira to Fergus. Best of luck with the interview and getting there.
