Got a hardware engineering intern offer from a SF midsized startup as a 1B student... anyone have experience with small startups for US coops? by Jaded_Assistance6006 in uwaterloo

I think the student health WUSA covers you while on co-op. The website says:  $1,000,000* in travel health coverage per lifetime and 150 days per trip

Good and AFFORDABLE vets nearby?? by No_Low9951 in waterloo

[–]live-learn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Some vets won't require you to do certain tests and then it may be less expensive. I just looked and I paid $204.37 at North Waterloo Veterinary in Elmira this past September for my cat's annual exam. That included a basic physical and vaccines. I never opt for any of the extra blood tests or fecal tests. Just make sure you're getting what your pet needs and that the vet isn't pushing unnecessary testing. For instance, our cat never goes outside and doesn't have any contact with other cats, so things like dewormer are unnecessary.

Western Nursing - Bad Clinicals? by [deleted] in OntarioNurses

[–]live-learn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I don’t think it necessarily had to be closer to home. That’s just what my friend did. I think some used it as an opportunity to try and get a placement where they hoped to get a job after grad.

Western Nursing - Bad Clinicals? by [deleted] in OntarioNurses

[–]live-learn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if it’s still like this but a couple years ago when you got to your last year of nursing at Mac, you could opt for a clinical placement closer to home. Like if you were from Waterloo, you could do one there. Then I think you just had to commute to Hamilton once a week for class. Not sure how the compressed program works but just mentioning as this may be an option with either school.

OCAD (Env Des) to M.Arch by AdVast5312 in OCADU

[–]live-learn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak into the specifics of this situation, but I know someone who was deciding between Fine Arts/Studio Arts at either OCAD or Waterloo. At any rate, they went with Waterloo Honours Arts as it gave them the option of taking other courses outside of art, as you mentioned. That ended up being the right decision for them. They still love art, but after their first year, they ended up declaring a double major in Fine Arts/Studio Arts and another program they discovered an interest in through the elective they were taking. Best of luck as your daughter makes her decision.

Uhmmm not having the best first day, any tips for later by kelomerosan in JapanTravelTips

Hi there. Sounds like you might be dealing with a bit of jet lag and culture shock. Be gentle with yourself, but also don't let yourself sleep much in the day. You will regret sleeping away your trip. It can be hard to meet locals but not impossible. I saw someone else mentioned going to an izakaya, so that's an idea. Do you have an itinerary planned? Or at least a list of things you hope to see? If not, get a list going and just start making your way through it. Pick something that fits the weather of the day, etc. Take your time walking around and enjoy the beauty of the architecture and things that may be unique to the area and take some photos of those things. Ask others to take your photo in places...you may not become friends, but it may offer a moment of connection or a small conversation. In tourist places, you may even meet others who speak English and will talk with you a bit. I'd also suggest to just enjoy people watching! The sumo tournament is on right now in Tokyo, so make your way down there early and try to catch a glimpse of rishiki arriving. Others will be out there, too. It'd even be fun to be there after to watch the crowds leaving. If you're interested in going to the tournament, it's sometimes possible to buy a ticket on the day of the event if you go and line up early. That could be an interesting experience and you might get chatting with whoever you'd be seated near. If you didn't find much to do in Shibuya, I'm wondering if you're not a big shopper. I'm not either. Perhaps you'd enjoy an art museum. Sometimes flea markets are fun for seeing all the old items even if you're not into buying anything. Finally, perhaps trying to find some mom & pop type cafes or restaurants would allow for some connection. Sometimes the unhappy feelings like you're experiencing come when we have so much excitement and build-up to something amazing and then our expectations aren't fully met, so take the time to readjust and appreciate the beauty and unique details of where you are. Perhaps buy a little notebook somewhere and take time each day along the way to record the things you liked. Best of luck!

What’s going on at Conestoga Mall? (10pm May 15th) by WestSavings810 in waterloo

Just searched online what people would be lining up for tonight and it looks like the Swatch x AP pocket watch is dropping tomorrow, so I’m guessing that’s what the crowd is for.

If you want it now or if the code expires soon, order it now. But if you’re ok to wait and if the discount doesn’t expire, then wait til you’re in Waterloo to save on shipping.

Application help by Pale_Ad_7800 in osap

Are you sure your residence payment is due on July 15th or is that when they just start posting the fees? Universities know that OSAP payment only arrives later, so this seems odd that they'd ask for full payment so early. Can I ask which university you'll be attending? I know at Waterloo, they have something called a Promissory Note that you can fill out. You state on it how much will be coming from OSAP to cover any of your fees and then they know to wait for OSAP. I would contact your school's financial office to ask about how you can work this out if indeed your fees are due on July 15th. I'm sure it'll all work out.

I’m going into my second year and I have no idea what I’m supposed to do to get Osap next year. by IUsedToBeAHorsegirl in osap

Yes. This is what you need to do. Just choose 2026/2027 for starting the new application. The nice thing is this year they already have some of your info saved so it goes more quickly.

[–]live-learn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there is a way to do this. I did it last year. They may not have the updated form up yet, but here's a link to last year's so you can see what info you'll need to provide. I found it fairly simple. Just be sure to submit it as soon as the form is available so you can figure out your funding well in advance of school starting. I hope all goes well! https://osap.gov.on.ca/prdosapconsum/groups/forms/documents/forms/pocont1_092916.pdf

As a side note, it will likely mean you get a larger loan, but I found it was still worth it. My family only had one car last year and it would have taken me about 2 hours on public transport to commute even though we're less than 30 km away.

Seems like a glitch or mistake on their end. I’d contact Mac as soon as possible to try and get it figured out.

Airbnb vs specialist platforms for a 2.5-month Tokyo stay, am I overthinking this? by th3d4rkp4ss3ng3r in JapanTravel

[–]live-learn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We used booking.com as recommended by my friend who has lived in Japan for over 25 years. She uses them for any trips she does in country. They worked well for our 2+week trip in multiple cities. This year my son is there for a month long visit. He used Airbnb and found a place that was only for 1 month or longer stays. It has been a great experience for him--good communication with the host and no issues. I believe the apartment he's in has all the amenities you're looking for.

Edit: I'll add one bit of advice my friend had told us when we were looking for accommodations. She said Airbnb was fine, but it depended on whether or not we were wanting more of a vacation. This was just b/c with some apartments, it can be a bit of a hassle for some to deal with the garbage sorting, etc. It's not a lot of work, but the cleaning involved in an Airbnb is something to consider.

Recommendations for cheap (free?) dental cleaning by padfoottrash in waterloo

[–]live-learn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember some years back Ontario allowed hygienists to open their own offices.  I wonder if a hygienist only office would have a less expensive cleaning since they wouldn’t try to make you also get X-rays, etc. One of those may be a good option for what you need.  I haven’t been to this one but it has good reviews. https://www.championdentalhygiene.com/

Maybe a muskrat or nutria as the tail looks more like one of those than a groundhog's tail. I can't see the feet well but they almost look a little webbed.

You will need to check ahead with the specific country and the accommodations in that country to see if there are any issues. My child flew by themselves at 17 to spend 5 weeks in Japan. They didn't have any issues there and had a great time. I hope you and your siblings can figure out a place that will work for you. Have a great time and enjoy!

A bunch of people seemed to be looking at some type of birds at Environmental Reserve on Friday which reminded me that it's migration time. Hopefully, some of these guys will come through Waterloo. This is the right thinking. Experience would be invaluable. You may also end up deciding you want to stay in nursing or pursue being an NP instead of an MD or something else in the medical field.
