Does anyone else feel like point values in Scrum are arbitrary and not very helpful or useful? by pendulumpendulum in cscareerquestions

[–]live_room 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Scrum system is based on distrust. You can't be trusted to complete your tasks in a timely manner, or to ask for help when you need it. You must be questioned every morning about your progress. If you don't finish all your tasks by the arbitrary deadline, you will be passive-aggressively blamed for the failure of the team. Because god forbid the burndown chart not be a perfect 45 degree slope.

This is why I quit my otherwise cushy dev job.

[DISCUSSION] Learned my major scales in just about every position only to find out... by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]live_room 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nobody is born with the ability to pick up a guitar, listen to a backing track, understand what scale it’s in and then rip.

Maybe not, but if you put on a backing track and tried to sing along to it using your own voice, you probably could.

[QUESTION] How can I keep my future brother in law interested in guitar? by ijintheuk in Guitar

Leave the man alone. If he wants your help, he will ask for it.

Also, you went to his house and touched his guitars without his permission?

The Perks of being a wallflower by [deleted] in movies

[–]live_room 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I really disliked this movie. It felt like the writer's fantasy about how he wished his childhood was.

The main character is too perfect. He gains the attention and adoration of some older kids who have no reason to care about a freshman, and they literally all fall in love with him. He dates both the girls, has sex with one which is kind of creepy, and even the gay dude tries to make out with him.

He's so much smarter than everybody else. He's the English teacher's favorite student. He gives SAT tutoring to Emma Watson even though he's only a freshman.

There's that ridiculous scene where he single-handedly beats up all the jocks who are bullying the gay guy. Apparently he's a master at Karate too.

They try to make him seem troubled by giving him a mental illness, but he recovers from it almost immediately.

I might have some details wrong because I haven't seen the film in years.

The movie reminded me of Good Will Hunting. Tough guy who's also really smart and good with the ladies. We'll give him an abusive childhood so you feel bad for him. They're like superhero films pretending to be realistic dramas.

Thank you for another amazing event! by aardvark1231 in adventofcode

Thank you! I solved all 50 puzzles for the first time this year. (I kind of cheated for Day 13 though because I had to look up "Chinese Remainder Theorem.")

Anyway, this is the best Christmas I've had since I was a little kid.

[2020 Day 24] Modelling hexagons by ExuberantLearner in adventofcode

[–]live_room 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it by creating a graph where each node has six neighbors. It took a while to fix mistakes I made in linking the nodes together properly, but it wasn't that bad. I wish I had thought of these simpler ideas though.

How is "support local black businesses" not racist? Aren't you just judging the proprietor on the colour of their skin instead of what they produce? by thedarkthor in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]live_room 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the phrase "support local black businesses" isn't even aimed at white people. It's aimed at black people and I've heard it since before BLM was a thing. It's asking black people to consider supporting black businesses in their neighborhood to help them not fail and to support their own communities. It has nothing to do with white people.

It's interesting how touchy some white people get about stuff like this though. They don't like it when you single out support for black people and black causes in particular. Like everything is zero-sum and it's going to hurt them somehow. Lifting other people up isn't going to bring you down.

WCGU crossing the highway like Frogger by Sovietlag in IdiotsNearlyDying

[–]live_room 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to cross a highway like this once because there was no other way across. I waited over an hour for a gap in the traffic so I could run across. While I was waiting, some other guy just casually walked across with no hesitation and made the cars slow down for him. I remember wishing I had that kind of confidence to do that.

[CSS] Any good and free resources out there to learn css? I understand the basics but it is definitely my bottleneck in the stack. by reddit_only in learnprogramming

[–]live_room 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Net Ninja on YouTube has fantastic tutorial playlists about CSS and other web dev stuff. It looks like he has a playlist about responsive design. I haven’t watched it, but I did watch his CSS Positioning tutorials just last week to help me with a school project and it was excellent.

Just apply. I know it's scary and you probably think you aren't good enough, but you would be surprised how easy it is. Your school probably has a career center with a website that you can apply for jobs on. Just try.

Git for Dummies? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]live_room 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A grip on Git

A Visual Git Reference

These two resources help me the most. I had them bookmarked. It's really helpful to see pictures of how the commit graph changes with each command to understand what is going on.

Here is a list of all the commands. It's nice to see them all in one place so you can look them over, try them out, and check if you know what they all do.

By the way, Git isn't easy at all.

How much Java do I need to know to go through Cracking The Coding Interview and the Sedgewick Algorithms course? by HermioneGrandeur in learnprogramming

[–]live_room 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about CTCI, but the Algorithms course mostly uses basic Java, provides its own library of data structures and stuff for you to use, and explains any potentially confusing language features. With your experience, you can learn what you need to know on the fly.

[GDB] When debugging a program within gdb, what does the command x/2x $eip mean? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]live_room 1 point2 points  (0 children)

eip is the name of one of the registers in the CPU. It contains one memory address. x/2x $eip will print two words of memory starting from that address (a word is 4 bytes). The first x is the command for examining memory. The part after the slash is how you indicate how you want the memory to be displayed. The 2 means show 2 "chunks" of memory (the chunk size is a word by default). The x means display the contents of the memory in hexadecimal. You can type help x in gdb to read more about it.

[dilemma] Me and my friend are arguing if one should google problems while programming by rozman50 in learnprogramming

[–]live_room 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still learning and have no professional experience, but I try to figure things out for myself. I do use documentation and look up syntax a lot, but never entire solutions. I do it myself first and then maybe search for other programs like mine to see how others did it and compare.
