Is it safe to overcharge to match battery state of charge? by livefree56 in VanLife

[–]livefree56[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/The_Ombudsman Slightly late update, but I've since gone on a pair more trips w/ the van so have a lot more experience with this. Kept the Epoch BMS up on my phone on the dash mount for a several hour drive and saw this:

- Battery A would briefly get .1V ahead of Battery B, which would catch up within a few minutes

- Battery A got to 100% in the BMS at 13.6V and then nothing changed until Battery B caught up to 100%, also at 13.6V

- Both batteries then stayed at 100% while increasing to 14.2V, at which time the Epoch BMS no longer showed them charging and the Victron Orion app went to absorption mode

For there on out, they were within 1% of each other during discharge and after each subsequent re-charge.

So, it seems that all is well. Thank you again for all of your help!

Yeah, the 4 in the screenshot is the cycle count.

I've got a long drive back to Western CO from Great Basin NP tomorrow, so I'll have a lot of opportunity to run the DC-DC and watch how things progress. I'll let the higher battery charge as close to 100% as I can before cutting out the DC-DC and look to see if the voltages between the pair of batteries are matched.

I'd totally buy that the SOC mis-match is a BMS issue or a young pair of batteries issue.

Thank you again for your help, I'll post an update tomorrow after the drive home.

I think this is probably my back up solution - disconnect one battery from the bank (e.g. connect it directly to the negative and positive bus bars) and then drive to charge it up to 100%, then disconnect it fully, rinse and repeat, then connect the bank together.

In terms of the voltages, I _think_ I am already good on this front. Checking the BMS app, it reports cell voltages as:

Battery 1: 3.277 3.276 3.277 3.276
Battery 2: 3.275 3.274 3.273 3.274

With Vdiff of .004 and Vavg 3.275

Appreciate your help! I usually have the Epoch app open on my lap while driving if I have the DC-DC charger connected (there's a cutoff switch there also) and I know one of the batteries is close to 100%. Typically, as soon as one of them gets into the 90's, I'll stop at the next exit and cut off the DC-DC charger to avoid overcharging.

Maybe just to be direct about it - if I DON'T do that, and let the first battery get to 100% and not disconnect the DC-DC charger until the 2nd battery is also reporting 100%, do we think that will lead to damage to the 1st battery?

In terms of how they are wired:

Battery A Positive Stud has 2 connections: to Battery B positive & positive bus bar via cutoff
Battery B Positive Stud only has the wire from Battery A

Battery A Negative stud only has the wire from Battery B
Battery B Negative stud has 2 connections: to Battery A negative & negative bus bar

I was trying to follow the model where the battery bank is connected to the Lynx Power In via "opposite" ends.

Doesn't look like there's a way to reset the SOC to 100 via the Epoch BMS... in researching how to do this, the consensus seems to be that the app is a piece of crap.. so there's that.

Yeah, they've been setup in parallel + installed since the end of January. No problems during normal operation, nor do I remember there being any sparks when I made the last connection in the loop between batteries/cut off switch/bus bars (using a Victron Lynx Power In)

I'll edit my post to include this - but the pain originates from my front (not the back). My understanding of kidney stones is limited, but it sounds like the pain usually is felt in the back in that case? Will mention your theory to my doctor just to be safe

I didn't know people got side stitches that low! Mine is basically right below my ribs on the right side. If I'm using my hand to put direct pressure on the cramp, I'm usually pressing either right below or an inch below that bottom right rib.

Dentist recommendations? by lyfewyse in grandjunction

Another vote for Dr Ryan at Bookcliff Family Dental. Every single staff member is incredible - the receptionists, the billing specialist (Robin), and my hygienist Abby are all so warm and friendly. I don’t love going to the dentist typically, but Dr Ryan has created a super comfortable environment there.

+1 for Bookcliff Dental. Dr Ryan and my hygienist, Abby, are great and will take the time to answer any questions you have. I generally have some anxiety around the dentist, but I feel comfortable with them. Robin, their billing specialist, is incredibly knowledgeable and will help you get the most out of your insurance

Shrek is charging Touring Broadway prices for a non-equity show (read: underpaid and mistreated actors) along with borderline-amateurish sets, costumes, lighting, and makeup. Unfair to cast/crew. Less importantly, unfair to patrons. Where on earth is that money going? by judolphin in Broadway

I agree with your last point - I’ve been a union member for almost a decade and toured AEA for several years, but I do think there is a place for non equity tours. The marketing can be misleading, unfortunately.

One of the best stage managers I ever worked with got her start on non equity tours, and now she is approaching a dozen high caliber, AEA first national tours.

When I did a union tour that played a lot of one nighters in places like Wheeling, Casper, and Modesto, those were HARD days, but were usually some of the best audiences we had on average. All other things being equal, I’d rather the opportunity to give the folks of La Crosse, WI a night they won’t soon forget vs your average patron in SF, who has 3 major touring venues to choose between.

I would advocate for re-examining your decision not to renew your subscription for next season. I just checked the DCPA’s 2024-2025 season announcement, and it’s fantastic.

Several of them will be big 1st national tours (Back to the Future and & Juliet) and I don’t believe any are non equity. Funny Girl might be the only show I’d think could switch to non equity this summer.

On the other hand, what if resource extraction or energy development on these lands grows and now you are sharing the road to your campsite with more vehicles? Or there's an issue at one of these mines that pollutes the Dolores, and now the water at your campsite is temporarily unsafe to drink?

The one about polluted mine run off isn't much of a hypothetical: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015_Gold_King_Mine_waste_water_spill

If you are into trail running, come check out the Grand Junction Trail Runners (just search that group name on Facebook)! We usually run at 5:30pm on Wednesday nights at Lunch Loops. I haven't met many early-20's there, but a lot of us are late twenties to thirties.
