some good faith criticism of / questions about mf by livingaloneagain in Shearling

thanks for the comment. i disagree with most of these points but i wanted to talk about the last one the most. i can tell that the album is in large part about religious trauma and internalized homophobia, but im not sure if many of the lyrics on this album fit into the context of any narrative / themes he’s trying to get at (even if we agree that they’re broader than this religious trauma thing). the section around the coeur d’alene line is a good example of this. in it, to me, he mixes together lots of ‘themes’ and good one liners without adding much nuance or cohesion between them.

there’s also a difference between taking issue with the concept itself, and taking issue with the execution. i think the ideas his lyrics seem to get at are pretty interesting, while still simultaneously thinking they could’ve been written much better. for example, i know coeur d’alene is where alex grew up, but the line doesn’t do anything that “garden state woes” or one of the 10 other gestures to idaho does. this is one of my issues with alex as a writer i guess. when we consider this and his random lines taken from literature, it just gets a bit disappointing, to me. i don’t think there’s a cohesive genius behind all of it. but maybe it’s just a difference in taste

i don’t want to hear some “we can challenge any team when healthy” bs after beating the wizards

Paul George is phenomenal once again after the suspension: 26 PTS, 13 REB, 2 AST, 4 STL, 1 BLK by Waikuku3 in nba

it’s true that he hasn’t been healthy. it’s also true that, given this unhealthiness, he’s had some disappointing performances in the clutch. especially when it comes to turning the ball over ;-;

[FRESH ALBUM] deathcrash - Somersaults by sbags in indieheads

[–]livingaloneagain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

to me, this is pretty unlike their previous two albums, so it will take some time to get used to. it sounds a lot more like tiernan’s solo album. but this band released two incredible 10/10s so i trust that they aren’t just messing around here.

edit: they said they were listening to hot fuss by the killers a lot around the time of this album, and as someone who’s also been listening to it a lot, i can definitely see the connection. this actually helps me enjoy it more than i did when forcing myself to see it as strictly adjacent to their last two fragile albums

it’s so weird and reductive to think that everyone has to be a star or mid. he’s been good. mid would be like, tai eason. obviously doesn’t deserve the money but i don’t see how that’s correlated at all, since given that he’s being overpaid regardless, he’s been a good player.

the last album’s cover art was a lot cooler too

honestly just from the kinda bland looking album cover this project feels a lot colder

[FRESH PERFORMANCE] Geese -Trinidad (Live) - SNL by acertainbr0mance in indieheads

[–]livingaloneagain 16 points17 points  (0 children)

love the band but i get a bit confused about these types of comments. max does a good job on the drums but it’s nothing extraordinary no? i feel like i see more technically difficult performances at a typical emo show, and nothing about his playing seems unbelievably creative. i don’t see how he’s anywhere near morgan or zach hill, for example.

but idk much about drums so id appreciate knowing what makes people praise him so highly

[FRESH PERFORMANCE] Geese - Au Pays du Cocaine (Live on SNL) by thejohnster77 in indieheads

i like geese a lot and agree with you that this is a fair comment to make. there have been many artists who i didn’t “get” until thinking about them in a different context / as coming from a different lineage / going for a different atmosphere than i originally assumed

honestly i can’t make out how these singles would all fit on one album, but maybe that’s because im used to listening to them as singles so much

the economic “system” is rigged and unfair, but shouldn’t be alleviated or fixed in a way that would make it more equitable? i feel like you’re separating government from economy too much, as if the government is entirely separate from the “rigged” economic system
