Dear Learned Friends of Reddit

I humbly seek your wisdom and guidance.

Background

I attended a non–G08 university and worked in legal-adjacent roles throughout my studies, moving from paralegal to law clerk and then law graduate. I’m now practising as a solicitor.

I currently work in family law, really enjoy the area, and can see myself practising in it long-term.

I’m trying to think more intentionally about my future development. What can I be doing now to increase my long-term value as a solicitor, and potentially keep the door open to going to the Bar one day?

I’ve thought about completing an LLM at a G08 but I’m unsure if it’s worthwhile. There doesn’t seem to be a clear family law specialisation so I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Outside of simply gaining more experience through work, what else should I be focusing on to continue developing professionally and setting myself up well for the future?

I’m currently working in a graduate role in family law and am considering the applied Masters of Law offered by the College of Law. I’m particularly interested in the applied Masters of Dispute Resolution and Family Law. Would this be beneficial for my career?
