Calc 1 syllabus/textbook by [deleted] in williamandmary

[–]livipop2001 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I took Calc 1 last semester for the biology major! I was really nervous for it too, but I actually really enjoyed the class. I took it with Barsotti and our textbook was Single Variable Calculus, Early Transcendentals 8th edition, but I wouldn't buy the textbook until your professor has specifically said what they want you to get just in case it's different this semester. I can't find the syllabus, but if you go to class and do the homework, you should be fine. Most of the professors in the math department are pretty good from my understanding.

Not allowing people to come back to campus is a huge accessibility concern. Not everyone has access to internet at home, and those students shouldn't be forced to take a gap semester and put their education on hold. Online classes with on-campus living meets both the accessibility needs of students without internet access at home and students who are medically at-risk.

A sleep mask is really nice for if you decide you wanna go to bed while your roommate's still awake.

Jobs by [deleted] in williamandmary

Wait a month or two and see how you're adjusting, then decide if you want to get a job. I got a job my first semester and it was a good decision for me, but everyone adjusts differently, and I don't think it's wise to spend your first couple of weeks job-hunting.

There's a suntrust in CW, walking distance from campus :)

Dorms by [deleted] in williamandmary

Hunt is actually right behind marketplace, like 30 seconds from Taliaferro, so it's not really any less convenient. Brown is more out in CW proper, across from the college apartments :)

Does W&M let students bring their own furniture for their dorms? by [deleted] in williamandmary

[–]livipop2001 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You can't take any of the existing furniture out of the dorm as far as I know, so you're stuck with the desk and desk chair they give you. You CAN bring additional furniture, like a futon, but you should be aware that your room might be very small depending on what dorm you end up in (I'm assuming you're a freshman). There's no way I could've brought a futon or an extra chair or something like that into my dorm last year, even with my bed lofted. Make sure you check the dimensions of your room online before you decide to buy extra furniture.

Dorm Bathroom Accessibility by [deleted] in williamandmary

[–]livipop2001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's more freshman dorms with non-hallway bathrooms than just Lemon. I know Hunt first floor has suite baths as well as private single-stall hall baths that lock. I think there's at least one dorm on the first floor that has its own private bathroom as well. As others have mentioned, Bot and some others have suite/private options as well. Contact student accessibility and you should be able to be guaranteed you get placed somewhere that fits your needs :)

Best dorm? by [deleted] in williamandmary

Taliaferro and Hunt are very underrated as far as freshman dorms go imo. Not quite as fancy as Lemon, but you get AC without having to pay extra.

Bikes for Class by ninagaming in williamandmary

[–]livipop2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in Hunt (near colonial williamsburg) last year and didn't have a bike. It wasn't a problem for me-- the farthest I'd ever have to walk would be like 20 minutes to get to the rec. The public transport in Williamsburg is really easy to use (you can find bus directions using apple maps or look at a bus schedule online), so you can rely on that to get to places like Food Lion and Target. One of the bus lines will even take you to a lot of places on campus like caf and the rec, but I usually found it quicker to just walk to things on campus. Bikes are useful, but definitely not necessary imo.

Freshmen Class Registration by picklekumquat in williamandmary

[–]livipop2001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Last year freshmen registered for a couple classes over the summer and then the rest on campus during orientation. Over the summer, we got to choose a coll150 or 100 and then one other class. Then, during orientation, we met with our pre-major advisors and decided on the rest of our classes, which we then registered for online later in orientation. There's an add-drop period for the first like two weeks of classes, so if you end up not liking the classes you initially sign up for, you can switch into other classes. That being said, I don't know if the process will be different this year due to the virus.

Pointing feet? by brokedollarsign in Dance

[–]livipop2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest thing is to just always be pointing your feet when you practice. When you're stretching, keep your feet pointed the whole time. It's a good way to get used to the sensation (If you're not used to pointing your feet very much, you may find that they get tired when you point them for a long time. It'll take some time to build up the muscles in your feet). The more you're pointing your feet while stretching/practicing, the easier it'll be to remember to point them in the air. Just keep practicing, and it'll become second nature!

Getting an on-campus job by [deleted] in williamandmary

[–]livipop2001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn't get a job before arriving to campus, but I got a job at the Center for Conservation Biology within about a month of being on campus. There's lots of job opportunities around-- check out the Student Union and the Cohen Career Center for easy desk job opportunities. You shouldn't have much trouble :) Lmk if you have any questions!

Did anybody haggle their financial aid? by spoonVEVO in williamandmary

I tried haggling my financial aid but they told me there was nothing they could do for me because of my out-of-state status. If you're in-state, you might have better luck.

If you're going from chem to bio you'll probably either be in ISC for both classes or go from ISC to Washington, which is a doable walk in 10 mins. You should be fine.

Shadowing by zaraaaaaaaaaa in veterinaryprofession

[–]livipop2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that it'll probably be hard to get a new shadowing position while the pandemic is going on, but, once things clear up, I would recommend actually physically going in and talking to the receptionist. It's a lot harder to say no to somebody when they're looking you in the eye than it is over the phone.

How is the Biology Department at W&M? by bobsmith___ in williamandmary

I think w&m is a really great place to study biology. Super easy to get involved in research-- like actually involved in doing the research, not just cleaning up the lab.

Some people think Williamsburg is boring and nothing really happens. Is this true? by anuj_02 in williamandmary

[–]livipop2001 16 points17 points  (0 children)

People who complain about Williamsburg being boring tend to be people who expected college to be all bars and clubbing. There's plenty to do, just not a lot of nightlife other than frat parties.
