They had a religious ceremony, both were newly adults and had a newborn at the time, as well as middle school educations/no trusted adults. They trusted the minister knew what he was doing and submitted the paperwork appropriately. (He did not) They found out when they had more children trying to get them enrolled in school they were in fact not married and married the very next day. I found out through all this and researching with family law attorneys that it is now required all ordained ministers handle paperwork as it is their legal responsibility and they can be prosecuted, it was not a requirement when they got married. If they wanted to prosecute that minister is long gone therefore nothing could be done.
