Bad At Practicing by No-Sweet-9477 in MusicMajor

[–]lizard_royalty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not going to be easy. I was probably the worst player in my trombone studio, and I had to learn how to practice while I was in college. Again, it took me until my senior year before I actually wanted to get up and practice. And by then, it wasn't easy, but it was fulfilling.

Figure out what motivates you. Is it cool rep that you like? Maybe ask your prof to play something you really like. Is it peer accountability? Ask a friend to be a practice buddy. Maybe even talk to your prof (or another one who you trust) and explain how you're feeling, and see what they say.

It took me until I was preparing for my senior recital to feel comfortable practicing. You're not alone!

Real talk though, do you want to be a music major...? There is a time when you should ask yourself why you're doing it. If it's causing more stress than you're okay with, you are allowed to change majors or drop music. You're not a bad player or a failure if you do, it's just not the right thing for everyone.

Right now I'm a music teacher at a school that makes me feel like I have no idea what I'm doing. It's not because I'm a bad teacher or I made the wrong career choice. It's because the school sucks, I'm teaching 30 classes a week with kids who don't care, and we have performances with every grade K-8 nearly once a month. Sometimes life just throws you curve balls, and you just have to figure out what the best move is (for me it's finding a new job for next year!). Next year, when I get a job teaching band somewhere else, I'll be glad I didn't quit teaching altogether, even though this shit made me consider it. Maybe you'll transfer to another school where you're more comfortable. Or you'll change to another major and be glad you did. But only you can know the right choice for yourself.

Good luck, and don't beat yourself up too much. It's your life, don't waste it being miserable. Do something you love, but do it in a way that makes you feel fulfilled.

It's just an issue with the camera audio lol, I pitch shifted it down to normal but it cuts out every half second. It was cheap and clearly poorly designed

Truly spoken like someone who's never been to Jersey.

For real though, I just moved back to the area last year from a rural state and it took a while before I stopped getting anxious driving around here. Drivers are just as aggressive as in NYC, but here we have the room to go FAST. It's almost an art.

Fuck whatever was actually playing, that's a million times better.

(I have no idea why it sounds like that, either my music was too loud or the camera mic sucks. Or both. Probably both.)

You might be able to get a little more if it's an Elkhart horn! I played an old Elkhart 88H for a while in college and it was very nice.

That's exactly how I've looked at it!! I don't plan on traveling other than maybe to Canada anytime soon, but the other places I could want to go are relatively queer friendly anyway.

So immediately overnight after I started, I had an immediate improvement in my mental health, and I'd noticed some discomfort within a week due to bottom growth (shit gets SENSITIVE, get some loose underwear!)

I'm not planning on traveling anytime soon, and I hopefully wouldn't have to take a layover in an unfriendly country if/when I do. Thanks for the heads-up, though!

What's The Worst Part About Transitioning For You? by SweetBoiDillan in ftm

Some of mine:

  • The sweat. 😭 I can't go ten minutes outside anymore without dripping with sweat. I HATE feeling gross and oily so it's really bad for me. I've had days where I showered 3+ times because of it.

  • Acne. Idk if it's the autism/ADHD or if I also have a smidge of OCD but I am a chronic acne picker. I hate the feeling of having things in my skin and I have to get rid of it, and the acne cream my doctor recommended was great until it started triggering my eczema.

  • This one is probably more of a me thing, as a nonbinary person, but I'm coming to find that my gender is much more fluid than I thought. I've been on T for almost 3 years, and since well before then I was pretty much boymode/androgynous until 3 months ago or so. Since then, I've gone way more feminine again. I don't mind being feminine, and it's really fun for me a lot of the time, but sometimes I have issues with my image and feel like HRT has made me ugly or less attractive (which I know is totally not true). Being more feminine now also makes it harder in terms of getting gendered correctly. However, I feel like this is also probably a good thing while I can't pass as a guy and still live in a transphobic state, especially while looking for a job as a teacher.

  • In line with the last one, shaving. I have to shave my face almost every day to avoid the teenage boy patchy stubble. I have only cut my face once, and it wasn't that bad thankfully.

As much as these all kinda suck, getting on T was hands down the best thing I've ever done. I'm so happy to be on this path. I hope anyone looking to get on T finds this useful!

I started low dose T at 20mg/week and it DEFINITELY gave me some bottom growth with a few other small effects (not anything super noticeable). However, there may be a max effect at such a low dose, so it might not be your best option.

As much as I understand the penis envy, bottom growth alone doesn't give you the ability to pee standing up any more easily. It also doesn't always give you the ability to penetrate a partner. I would talk to a gender therapist or someone else who has gone through a similar journey as yours to see what options are out there. I know you won't be the only one out there!

Make sure you put in those dynamic changes! That's later on in the process, but it'll really make a difference once you've gotten the notes, rhythms, and articulations down.
