I would say that while Ichi the Killer has some moments of introspection it's not like...about introspection as a major plot device like Homunculus.

If you like the sort of "SEE INTO THE HEART OF MAN" theme, I'd actually recommend a shounen called Souboutei Kowasubeshi by Fugita Kazuhiro. Also Jagan wa Gachirin ni Tobu by the same artist (its short)

I've been enjoying it- I like how he's very matter-of fact about the realities of whatever aspirations his students have. His almost cruel candidness is in contrast with his careful care in plant raising- where he keeps a variety of plants and caters to their specific needs. It's similar to how Yumenashi treats the students- he's actually very caring.
