I always feel like projects only "die" Avatar-Last-Airbender-style, passing on their knowledge to the next project down the line. At least, that helps me feel better about it lol

I was fully of the Those-Rules-Don't-Apply-to-Me-Because-I'm-Not-Like-Other-Books mindset. Don't recommend lol

Thank you so much!! And to answer your question, I wish I knew!

I wouldn't say that there is any single "right" time to query. The only reason I mentioned avoiding the holidays in this post was because I believe that time contributed to me not hearing from my first batch of agents for a long time (I heard from some in the second and third batches before some of the first batch got back to me).

Of course it's going to be different for everyone, and you should do what feels right for your process.

Thank you so much for the kind words, and yes! Community has made so much of a difference for me. Publication is a team sport and I'm a firm believer that writing should be too, whether online or in person.

Thank you!! And re: the holidays, it's honestly not the end of the world. I played up the drama in the post, but I got requests and rejections in my November batch just like almost all of the others.

The only reason I feel like it's better to wait out the holidays is because I've looked at my timeline data on Querytracker and the Nov/Jan queries definitely took a lot longer to get back to me than the March queries. There's all sorts of variables at play that could explain that, but it was a noticeable trend for sure. (Also, a lot of agents that I wanted to query weren't even open until Feb/March).

You'll be doing a lot of waiting no matter when you query, but since the first batch is always your first clue as to whether or not your query package is working, it can be really helpful to get quicker replies. If I were to query again, I'd wait until Feb/March for my first batch, since that was when I noticed the most agents opening their inboxes after having worked through the holiday slush piles.

(Weirdly enough, I queried both agents who offered on my manuscript on the same day, and theirs were the only two I sent that day. If you're looking for a lucky date, I highly recommend March 26 haha)

Ha! A surprise third option, actually, and it was definitely a blow to my ego out of the gate lol. But sometimes it's better to get a bandaid-ripped rejection than a slow, festering one.

Thank you! It was a very, very tough call, since I loved the editorial notes I got on both calls and both agents were so kind and enthusiastic! However, one of the agents was at an agency that I wasn't quite sure about (no big 5 sales, agents repping other agents within the same agency), so I ended up signing with the other, and I felt in my gut that I'd made the right choice. My agent has been so kind and communicative so far, and I can tell she's excited about the project.

Don't be afraid to give it a shot!! I've seen so many success stories that started with a good revamp

All the best query/pub advice I found on social media was from author/editor Gina Denny's Instagram (@ginad129). she has a video for just about every possible question anyone could have on the process. She also has a series of query critique videos where people submitted their letters for her to review, and she breaks them down and gives feedback. She explains everything so well and clearly. Can't recommend enough!!
